Product Description

Product Description

This classic cookbook offers more than an authentic cuisine - it proffers a way of life based on compassion for all living things. For veganism is grounded in the simple truth that primary food - fresh fruit and vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts, pulses and so on - is not only healthier, but ecologically, ethically and spiritually superior to the mass-produced fodder of agri-business and factory farming. But gourmets will also find delights here among over 200 recipes ranging from the everyday to the celebratory.

For this updated edition, Gordon Baskerville and Alan Wakeman have conjured up more than a dozen new recipes, improved some of the original ones and thoroughly revised and updated the information sections.

This was the first book I bought when I became vegan as I took it out the library so many times I thought I'd better buy my own copy. It has an excellent section on the non-dairy things with a variety of creams; single, double and coconut. The rum truffles are out of this world and even better if you coat them in melted chocolate and would convince even the most die-hard meat eater than vegan food can be lovely.

A very comprehensive vegan cookery book that also includes notes on vegan nutrition. The chapters are broken down into Soups, Starters, Main Dishes, Side Dishes, Salads, Desserts, Sauces and Dressings, Spreads, Baking and the Alternative Dairy. Each chapter begins with the easiest/cheapest recipes and progresses towards more elaborate and equally delicious concoctions. Nutritional details for each recipe are given at the bottom of each page. In this book vegans will find recipes for everyday cooking and also recipes to entertain vegan and non-vegan friends alike. This book deserves a place in every vegan or non-vegan kitchen and will encourage its readers to be more creative in their cooking.

Best vegan book ever! 31 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
I keep coming back to this book; the recipes just taste fabulous and they work. The lemon cheesecake is better than any dairy version. I like the variety and the excellent ingredients. This is a book for people who love to cook and cook well, not a 'quick-cook' book. It's for serious vegans and non-vegans alike, who love the taste of good food. I haven't come across a boring or bland recipe yet; these guys have obviously experimented with different combinations and the result is a set of recipes that have that wonderful 'clean' taste that the best vegan food can offer. No stodge here, not masses of pasta dishes either. Brilliant!
