i read this book first in 1994 when i was 15 and i fell in love with it so completly that i still have these books in my possesion today! Everyone who wants to escape the daily grin and fall in love just a little should read these books!!! Excitment, suspense, love and passion fill the pages from cover to cover. It is the ultimate test of whether you like Mr Right or if, like me, you have a soft spot for a bad boy!!! Enjoy!

The last time I read this series I was 15 years old I had two main obsessions - teen vampire novels and L J Smith. You can guess how much I viewed 'The Vampire Diaries' and the 'Night World' series as my idea of heaven! 4 years on and I'd like to think my taste in literature has matured and improved somewhat to now read novels that actually count as literature, but after reading Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series last week (a guilty pleasure, I know), and finding countless comparisons to 'the Vampire Diaries' I decided it was about time I re-visited the books I used to adore a few years back and see once and for all whether Smith's novels are purely for hormonal teenage girls or if they have any substance and audience beyond.

The story will be familiar to those acquainted with Meyer's Twilight series, though this was written 15 years before Twilight was even published. Elena is a school girl restless of her life though she has everything she could want, until she meets Stefan Salvatore (the new, gorgeous and mysterious boy at school) and is determined to have him. Unlike most guys however, Stefan is not infatuated with Elena and treats her coldly, leaving Elena feeling humiliated> It is not until Stefan saves Elena from an attack from fellow school boy Tyler that Elena finally realises that perhaps Stefan's behaviour towards her isn't dominated by hate at all, and that the boy has many secrets to hide, the least of which being that he's a vampire. Add to this a string of unsolved crimes that begin as soon as Stefan steps into town (though he does not remember committing them) and a mysterious stranger that Elena is constantly running into, and you've got yourself a typical teen vampire novel, with one difference - L J Smith is the Queen of teen vampire novels.

I read this series when it first came out, when I was still in high school. I have read a wealth of other authors who write adult novels but still have to say this is my favorite story of all time...that has to tell you something. No other story I have EVER read has inspired the obsession I have with this one. And I do mean obsession; there is no other word for it. It is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. LJS brings these characters to life; they live and breathe, and you suffer their pains and celebrate their triumphs right along with them. You cry with them, you laugh with them, you *are* with them. And when it's over, the emptiness of being without them makes you go back and start all over again. Elena is strong and courageous, with an arrogance only those readers who would be jealous of her in real life would despise. Understand her circumstances, and she is everything you wish you were, and everything you try to be. Stefan is a tragic figure, tortured by guilt and healed by Elena's unconditional love. Damon is dark and beautiful, utterly charming and seductive and fearsome, with an arrogance only Damon is worthy to possess. He will astoud you, frighten you, he will get a hold on you from which there is no escape. Bonnie and Meredith and Matt are the most loyal friends anyone could have, and each has their role to play, and each plays it to their fullest extent. Bonnie's psychic powers are awesome despite her charming inhibitions; Meredith's tragic family history is wrenching and she handles it with admirable strength. Matt's devotion to Elena is almost heart-breaking, and the lengths he will go to for her will never cease to amaze you. Read this story. Treasure it. Let it become your world, and it will truly change you. I speak from experience; it has inspired me in ways I will never be able to describe. And it will continue to do so for years to come.

This book is AMAZING! honestly! If you haven't read any of Smith's books yet,- you don't know what you're missing! It's one of those books that you really just can't put down. Smith keeps it exciting and a compelling read throughout the book, and you fall in love with the characters, (especially Stefan!) Straight away! This book is GREAT!

This book, THE AWAKENING, seems like the beginning of a really dull and droned out series by L.J. Smith which I don't for any reason want to continue reading. The thing is that all her books are getting repetative, and at times the plot's loose and loses track of what the story was about in the first place. But well, that's what you get when you write an abundance of books simutaniously.

I stumbled on to this series at a book store many years ago. I couldn't believe that there were books this well done. This series takes you into it. You are right there watching everything happen. The flashbacks are extremely vivid also. Smith keeps you in her creation because you end up reading and rereading the series. The Diaries encaptured me to the point where I was crying my eyes out at times and I had to put the book down for a minute. I used to ignore my other novels and just read these. I would even take them to school and show my best friend. HE even began to love the series. It is well worth your time and money.
