Book Description

Based on significant new research from multiple sources, Richard Barrett creates a compelling narrative about why values-driven organizations are the most successful organizations on the planet. According to Barrett, understanding employee’s needs—what people value—is the key to creating a high performing organization. When you support employees in satisfying their needs, they respond with high levels of employee engagement and willingly bring their commitment and creativity to their work.

This book updates and brings together in one volume, two of Richard Barrett’s previous publications, Liberating the Corporate Soul (1998) and Building a Values-Driven Organisation (2006), to provide a reference manual for leaders and change agents who wish to create a values-driven organization. The text provides both a leadership approach, and a language, for organizational transformation and culture change that incorporates concepts such as cultural entropy, values alignment and whole system change.

With an updated set of cultural diagnostic tools and a wide range of new and exciting case studies on culture and leadership development, The Values-Driven Organization will be essential reading for students, researchers and practitioners in the fields of organizational change, leadership and ethics.

Review

"Having followed his work over the last few years, what I really appreciate about Richard Barrett's writing, and in particular his latest book 'The Values-driven Organization', is that he integrates his own personal journey into his offerings - and also that of his company, the Barrett Values Centre. This alone gives me confidence that he really knows his subject - with authenticity, integrity and at a deep level. In this new book he creates a 'bridge' for organizational leaders, consultants and coaches between the mind and the soul, between the head and the heart. He focuses on providing clarity to those who seek to understand the evolution of personal and collective human consciousness - and draws on his many years experience of working with organizations to provide practical guidance and tools to enable leaders to take the necessary steps to unleash human performance within their own lives and then, acting as role models, within their organizations. As an organizational and leadership development coach, I know that I will be drawing on the wisdom in this book for many years to come." - Chris Monk, Partner - Global Business Leaders

'Richard Barrett has made extraordinary contributions to our understanding of the seemingly nebulous yet critical topics of organizational values and culture. His frameworks for measuring cultural entropy and enabling whole system transformation are elegant, deceptively simple and yet dramatic in their practical implications. Richard’s thinking is expansive, his reservoir of knowledge is vast, and his connection to timeless wisdom is profound. His work is indispensable to the Conscious Capitalism movement.' -
Raj Sisodia, Co-founder & Co-Chairman, Conscious Capitalism Inc and Professor of Marketing at Bentley University, USA

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and practical template for change 10 Oct. 2013
Format:Paperback
In this, his latest book, Richard has succeeded in significantly extending the thinking from his previous works. He has built on the seven levels of consciousness model and his earlier organisational transformation tools. He begins by presenting highly convincing evidence of the power of values by comparing the performance of values-driven companies against the norm. He goes on to explore employee engagement with the twin principles of intellectual or mission alignment and emotional or values alignment. He demonstrates how employees at different levels of psychological development have different needs and how organisations that recognise this can create the highest levels of engagement. He talks of the current culture of an organisation being the result of the values of current leaders and the legacy of previous leaders. And he provides a practical approach to the personal alignment required for leaders to change and the structural alignment required for an organisation to adopt holistic culture change.
Thought provoking, inspirational, logical and immensely practical. A book that should be read by anyone hoping to be an effective 21st century leader.

An excellent book for those who want to learn about organizations driven by values instead of profit, of course profit will be there but it will not be the daily goal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transcending performance and profit 15 Sept. 2013
Format:Paperback
Richard Barrett not only updated two previous books, but succeeded in writing a highly readable, compelling and practical new book about how to best lead organizations (and even nations if you take this wider). There's more aspects to his contribution to unleash human energy in organizations: most visible is the "cultural transformation toolc" (CTT) he developed, to map and measure culture. This simple and practical tool far exceeds the usual employee satisfaction monitors for example, as CTT not only measures the health, but it also points out where and clarifies why (dys)satisfaction and (non-)alignment in organizations arise. The tool described in his book also provides a clear and practical transformational agenda as a start for a journey to undertake whole system change. The other aspect here is the role of leadership: Barrett makes a clear case for leadership development to start with the leader him/herself, then with the team, prior to any actioning in the organization.
Barrett inspires the reader to leave belief-based thinking (esp. as based on fear)and to expand to values-based performance, thereby reducing separation and enhancing trust and connectedness.
Most compelling though is his consciousness model: individual leaders (in fact any person), teams and organizations are mapped in this 7-level model, thus clarifying from which perspective entities tend to operate from. Barrett shows us that any consciousness level not only has its own sets of values ánd beliefs, but also approaches, tools etc.
