This is a book about IT for board members. It contains many interesting themes and viewpoints though they are often of the kind "this is how things should be". Nevertheless, I feel the intended audience will not get past the introduction. Perhaps the book is better suited as a tool in the hands of CIOs or consultants who want to explain matters to their board. All in all I do not think the book will make much difference.

The Value of IT 16 May 2008
Format:Hardcover
I recommend Ade McCormack's book to both business leaders and technologists. The fundamental premise, that the value of IT is ultimately down to how well the IT function and the business work together, is hardly novel, but the systematic way in which Ade deals with this, explaining the how as well as the why, is insightful and of practical help. I was particularly impressed by his thoughts around the more nebulous areas of the "stack", namely "circulation management" and "value management."

Successful strategies rely on the fusion of deep business thinking and enabling technologies, and getting the relationship right is vital. Ade's book helps me understand how this can be done. I spend a lot of time talking with CEOs and find his book a valuable reference point, giving me insights into the different perspectives and challenges across organisations, and reminding me of the contributions IT delivers - when wisely leveraged"
