Book Description

Poppy Carew has just been dumped by her unscrupulous boyfriend, Edmund, when her beloved and eccentric father dies, leaving Poppy one last request - that she ensure he is buried in style by a 'fun' undertaker - and one large fortune.

Carrying out his wishes, Poppy finds not only a fun funeral parlour, and an equally fun wake peopled with very generous old ladies who all seem to know her father very well, but also several eligible young men, all of whom are keen to get to know the new heiress. And when Edmund remembers the charms that he quickly forgot in the arms of his new lover, Venetia, there are suddenly too many choices for Poppy Carew...

Review

Told with elegance and asperity by the superb Anna Massey (Sunday Telegraph on THE CAMOMILE LAWN)

'Anna Massey could read the telephone directory and I would listen. When she's reading a writer of the quality of Mary Wesley, it becomes a real pleasure.' (Oxford Times)

Book Description

Mary Wesley's dazzling fourth novel, read by Anna Massey

5.0 out of 5 stars A relaxing read, it made me smile! 6 Nov. 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I was getting ready to board an airplane with nothing to read, so I popped into the bookstore, perused and picked this book by an author previously unknown to me. In spite of a hectic schedule, I finished the book in two days. I wanted to meet the character and have a chat. I felt by the end of the book, I had done just that.
It is the trials and tribulations of a woman trying to sort through her life, bury her father and come to terms with her distant father/daughter relationship with him and men in general. There was only one character I couldn't stand (by design), quite unusual in most books currently in print. Many interesting sub-plots. I intend to buy several more books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars read it! 7 Jan. 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you haven't read any Mary Wesley novels start now. The vacillations of Poppy Carew is just what you need as an introduction. Light, funny and even a bit quirky. I'm rereading for aboutthe 4th time, and still enjoying it.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Vacillations of Poppy Carew 7 Oct. 2009
Format:Paperback
This was the fifth Mary Wesley book I have read, unfortunately it was the most disappointing. I could not take the characters seriously, a good story line but a little far fetched in places. Overall a disappointing read, although thoroughly enjoyed the other books I have read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Wesley 7 Dec. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Love all Mary Wesley's work and this is one of my favourites. Sad that she started writing so late in life. Just wish she'd written twice as many.
