Book Description

5 April 2012
Growing food is different in the city: life is faster and space is tight. So it is vital to focus on only the most rewarding edible plants. In The Urban Kitchen Gardener, Tom Moggach selects his best city crops, from the familiar chillies and strawberries to the more unusual Japanese shiso and Mexican mouse melons. For each entry, Tom offers practical advice on growing, picking, preserving and cooking your harvest. More than 150 delicious recipe ideas include Coriander and Coconut Chutney, Chilli Corn Bread, Shiso Granita and cocktails such as a Honey and Basil Daiquiri. He also shares expert advice for success with pots and containers, and on windowsills, patios, balconies, roof gardens, back gardens and allotments. Other chapters cover seed saving and green gardening. This is an inspirational guide to making the most of your urban plot, whatever its size.

Review

'Lucky urban gardeners. Here's a book tailor made for their small spaces and diverse tastes, written by a gardener who cooks and a cook who gardens. It bursts with energy (I'm sure Tom leaps up steps two at a time) and I love the way recipes and practical tips are gleaned from chance encounters wherever he goes, at home and far afield, vividly recounted, then relayed in a practical way for others to adopt. It's lively and fun and inspiring : every few pages you find yourself saying 'I really must try that'.'Joy Larkcom

'Chillies on the window ledge and mouse melons on the patio. Tom Moggach sees food growing potential everywhere and shows you how to turn it into imaginative meals.' Lindsey Bareham, food writer

'Tom has captured his knowledge, vast experience and infectious passion for growing and cooking in this exciting new book for urban gardeners. He shows that even the smallest of outdoor spaces can be productive and hugely rewarding.'
Joe Swift, garden designer and broadcaster

'Tom Moggach offers a lesson on how to make greens exciting for children with help from his mouse melons.'
Evening Standard

'I loved this book: the tone is encouraging and enthusiastic, the recipes mouth-watering and the photos by Laura Hynd are beautiful, making this the ultimate edible gardener's guide.' BBC Gardens Illustrated

'He aims to revolutionise the way we cook and believes that with a few unusual finishing touches of exotic herbs, busy folks can make instantly interesting meals.' Metro

'Great for gardening beginners, it takes different fruit, vegetables, herbs and even edible flowers, and tells you how to grow them, including tips and recipes for cooking with your home-grown bounty.'
Grazia

'A fun, quirky guide that not only offers 150 recipes that you actually want to try, but plenty of practical advice for growing in a small space.' --The Edible Garden

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended 14 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Great book for a learner like me. The other veg growing books I have bought/been given are either too technical and impersonal, or just too narrow in focus. I don't want a gardening book to be like a manual for installing a washing mashine, so this comes as a refreshing change. Have been casting a fresh eye over my garden and windowsills, and looking forward to some new planting. Mouse melons anyone?
