Book Description

1 Sep 2009
Get out your bells, books, and candles; this witch is ready to kick some ass. For Angelica Kane, encountering the ghost that terrorized and nearly killed her a year ago is more than just an eerie annoyance. It's just the first in a proverbial house of cards. A psychic-fair reading reveals that another woman is out to seduce her husband Jonathon. Then the woman turns up dead, Jonathon's business card clutched in her hand. Angelica's world tumbles into a downward spiral, accelerated by sizzling sexual chemistry with her very own Lancelot-Sean Bennette, the officer investigating the murder. As rumors of an affair spread, Angelica finds an ally in a sister witch who shares her gift of psychic visions. Together the two women, the handsome detective, and the specter lugging a load of karmic debt race to prove Jonathon's innocence. But poison is no respecter of time. Angelica must decide if she's willing to pay the price to uncover the painful truth. Truth that could bring her love-or cost her life. Warning: Run the cold showers...contains sex and profanity

4.0 out of 5 stars Witch's Brew 3 May 2010
By Foggy Tewsday VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
There are two things that are noticeably different in this novel compared to B. Ella Donna's first, Every Witch Way But Dead: the cover picture on `The Upside of Karma' is far more provocative than the more conservative one that adorns the first novel, and the title itself is refreshingly non-punning. These factors help to convey the notion that the second novel in the `Angelica Kane' series is being taken into darker, more erotically-charged territory. There are some very fruity scenes in this second instalment and they are described in commendably graphic detail. The story itself takes the lead character through an emotional minefield as she learns of her husband's infidelity - a character trait we had learned of in the first novel. But this time, his lover has been found dead and he is the cops' prime suspect.

Angelica tells the story in the first person and the full emotional impact of her husband's betrayal is slammed home as she finds herself falling for the hunky detective in charge of the murder investigation. Again, this is a character from the first novel. Most times when I've reviewed novels that form part of a series, I've recommended that the books be read in the correct order. I don't think this is strictly necessary in the case of these two novels. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend the first if you're into paranormal romance and mystery fiction. However, if you only enjoy these genres in the cozy mould, you should probably give this series a miss.

The author adeptly fuses Angelica's visions into the narrative without padding them out.

The author adeptly fuses Angelica's visions into the narrative without padding them out. There is also some room for humor as Angelica is by turns helped and hindered by a spectral presence who seems to be serving a kind of afterlife community service punishment.

Angelica's friends are more colorfully drawn in this novel. However, I was a little disappointed by the lack of prominence given to Angelica's children considering the state her marriage is in. The introduction of a new character, Heather, had me intrigued. I hope she is featured in further novels (I really hope there will be more books in this series). She conveys such a beguiling combination of beauty, wisdom and vulnerability that one could imagine more stories revolving around her.

`The Upside of Karma' is a splendid second instalment in the `Angelica Kane' series. If you've already read `Every Witch Way But Dead', you're sure to enjoy this book. It's a little more satisfying and beefier in terms of storytelling than the first, in my opinion. One other thing: with all the delicious grub that the characters consume, seemingly on every page, I don't think I've ever felt so hungry when reading a novel!
4.0 out of 5 stars The Upside of Karma 22 Jan 2010

When the ghost of the man who nearly killed her last summer appears, it's only the beginning of the problems for witch Angelica Kane. In addition to being followed around by a ghost intent on working off his karmic debt, Angelica finds out that her husband, Jon, is having an affair. When the woman he was sleeping with turns up dead and Jon is arrested, things go further south. Despite his philandering, Angelica knows she has to prove Jon's innocence, and to do that she needs the help of Sean Bennette, the detective investigating the murder. With the help of her sister witches, Angelica is on the hunt for the real killer. But in her quest for the truth, Angelica learns things that have the ability to bring her world crumbling down around her...and the power to bring her the greatest love she's ever known.

Danger lurks around every corner in this enchanting offering by B. Ella Donna. The Upside of Karma is an engaging, satisfying read with characters who feel like they could live right next door to you. I really liked Angelica; she's a sensible woman who puts her children and friends first. She doesn't put up with Jon's cheating, but that doesn't mean she doesn't still care for him, nor does it stop her from trying to prove his innocence. As for Angelica's true love interest, Sean is gorgeous and giving. He's willing to do anything to make Angelica find happiness, even if it's not with him. Their road to happily ever after isn't instantaneous nor is it smooth, but The Upside of Karma is the better for this.

While the mystery in The Upside of Karma stands on its own, almost all the characters appeared in the first Sexy Sorceress story, Every Witch Way but Dead. There were many references to events that took place in the first book, but with just enough information so that someone new to the series would not be lost. I was able to follow along in The Upside of Karma, but not having read Every Witch Way but Dead, I felt I was missing some things. Still, I greatly enjoyed The Upside of Karma and am definitely planning to read the first Sexy Sorceress book.
