Format: Paperback
Not one of his greates novels, but nevertheless interesting, "The Unvanquished" consists of seven related stories, six of them previously published in newspapers and magazines. Only the last story "An Odor of Verbena" was written exclusively for this book. Set in Faulkner's mythic Yoknapatawpha county, "The Unvanquished" tells of the Sartoris family during and after the Civil War. The narrator of all the stories is Bayard Sartoris, son of the famous Colonel John Sartoris. He is 12 years old in the first story, and matures through all the stories. In the final story he is 24 years old. The novel deals with Bayard's maturity and with his changing view of his father, who is a hero in the community. It also (as is usual for Faulkner) deals with the relationship between blacks and whites, the role of the community in the life of the individual, and with the concept of manhood. "The Unvanquished" is considered by many as a minor novel, but it is still a fascinating story and for a new reader of Faulkner, it is a good novel to start with, because of its fairly simple language.
