Product Description

Little did James realize when he answered the ad in the paper that he would be thrust into the middle of an adventure that will test the limits of his intelligence and courage. Not given any sort of explanation why he has been brought to this world, James, a high school senior, must discover the reason. He quickly realizes that he's able to use the knowledge he gained through the hundreds of books he's read, as well as the time spent in role playing games to help him along. The world he's been brought to is one on the edge of war and only by learning to control the magic within himself will he be able to survive the trials ahead. With the help of a boy named Miko, he sets out across this strange world to discover why he's there and what he must do.

From the Publisher

The Unsuspecting Mage is the first book in The Morcyth Saga, a new epic fantasy series by Brian S. Pratt. From beginning to end, it's jammed pact with action & adventure. Not knowing what is going on from the antagonist's viewpoint gives this book an excitement others lack. An avid reader for years, Mr. Pratt brings his own original slant to the genre that has entertained millions. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Worst saga ever 14 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
My justification in giving a poor review is that I have bought up to book 7 now, as I always hoped they would get better and improve but sadly not.

The premis is simple enough, a moderen day teen is sent to a world of magic - where he is the magician - simple enough.

The story unfolds quickly enough into fighting and magic.

As a BIG fantasy fan of Eddings, Feist, Weis, Hickman et all I had high hopes for this, but trust me when i say, this is amateur writing at best.

Pratt starts off with "Rhyming" to make magic work, then provides an excuse to stop the need for rhymes for the spell casting - my thought is that he becmae as embarrrassed as i did reading the awful dialogue.

The main character has as much depth as Miss World. He immediately assumes the role of the champion of moral virtue and maturity, and comes across as a condescending little brat. This is the first time I have actually hated the hero and hoped he died.

Pratt seems a very poor and lazy writer and the amount of times that the main character and his cronies are outnumbered and "the ground errupts throwing men and horses every which way" is dull.

The love interest introduced is comical, as well as the old friends return in about book 4 or 5. This is not is spolier.

If you are young and want a good fantasy read, go for the Belgariad by David Eddings as a classic story, avoid this. I share in Pratts inability to convey a good story if I have left you in any doubt as to how bad these books are.

Now I'm not saying wow because of the punctuation, no. There are many comma and period errors, it lost one star for that. But the story itself is especially engaging. Here's James, just going for what he thinks is an interview for a job and then BAM!!! he's suddenly in a clearing in the middle of a forest. A little creature(who has recurring guest appearances)tells him three things. 1. You can't go home 2. Magic works here 3. Get your sorry butt to the village of Trendle. Then Poof! he's gone. What made me fall in love with this story is the fact that he simply doesn't know why he's there, or even where this village of Trendle may be. Through trial and error he gets there and so begins the adventure. Anyone who loves role-playing games or reads lots of fantasy will love this, for he works through many of the problems he faces by using the experiences he's gained playing with his friends. (What ever happened to Dave anyway?) I'm telling you, you've got to read this book. It's fun, has heart pumping action, and some levity thrown in as well, just about everything you could want. If this is his first book he's ever written, I can't imagine where he'll be five or even ten books down the road. Great job Mr. Pratt!!

The author writes his story different than most of the rest. First of all he puts it in present tense which after you get use to it really makes not difference. Aside from that, he writes just like someone is telling the story.

I found it rather refreshing after all the other books I've had to slug my way through, (The latest Thomas Covenant for example). Easy to read and full of action, I found it hard to put down.

Not that great
I have to agree with the majority in that this book is not great. There just isn`t much depth to the main character and I found him very difficult to get interested in. Read more

Could have been better. A lot better!
To start with the positive - I did enjoy this, and finished it. In general, it flowed well, and there was enough interest in it to keep me wanting to see what happened next. Read more

Interesting but not in a good way
First off for a simple point blank review. Not worth any money but for free it's not a bad read if you have nothing better to be doing.
