Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

First contact with Hawkins' music was alternately joyful and bewildering. The Unstoppable Ted Hawkins brings it all back. Here was a singer with a voice to die for, a Sam Cooke risen from the grave, by turns pleading and positive, wistful and wily. But the songbook in his head was unique, a great fat scrapbook of soul and R&B and country, everything from "Dock of the Bay" and "Let the Good Times Roll" to "Your Cheating Heart" and, good grief, "Country Roads"--mingled with pieces of his own, odd yet gripping and hard to forget, such as "Watch Your Step" and "The Lost Ones". All these and a dozen or so more are gathered in the warm embrace of a show Hawkins gave, alone with his guitar, one winter night in 1988, at London's Mean Fiddler club. He died a few years later, but this informal recording, issued here for the first time, conjures up more than a ghost of his good-humoured and immensely likeable presence. --Tony Russell

fRoots, June 2001

Nearly six years after the death at age 59 of troubadour Ted Hawkins, this superb live recording suddenly surfaces. Recorded on a cassette Walkman by guitarist Michael Messer with view to using it as a reference for learning some of Ted's songs, it caught the man at his very best. There are a few microphone pops but overall the sound has such presence and is so well balanced that it's hard to equate it with the way it was recorded. The performance, which took place in December 1988 at the Mean Fiddler Acoustic Room, Harlesden, is confident but relaxed, intimate yet powerful. Ted's enjoying himself immensely and his enjoyment is infectious. The easy strum of his guitar falls lightly on the ear while the glow in his voice warms the heart. The set list is typical Ted Hawkins--some soul and country covers interspersing Ted's own songs--and, of course, "Zip Pe Dee Doo Dah". If previous fans think they shouldn't bother because they've heard it all before they should think again as this is a record of a great performance. The presence of an audience spurs Ted to reach a little further than on his studio recordings and his verbal communication with his audience is quite delightful. For those who might like to sample the simple pleasures of the honey bear voiced Mr Hawkins then this CD is the place to start.

If you never had the pleasure and honour of seeing Ted Hawkins live then get this, if you did then still get it.

Ted Hawkins was one of the greatest talents I have had the pleasure of seening and listening to, the range of his music, his voice and the enormity ( not just his physical size ) of the man. This album provides an insight into a Ted Hawkins gig more than adequately, sit back late evening turn off the lights, throw some beer around the room and light a ciggy ( even if you don't smoke) and let the man and his music take you to realms you have never been to. Unfortunatly for you, you will still only get 50% of really being there. If you have had the pleasure then do the same as above and your experience is probably near 90%. This album took me back to the 80's when Ted was doing the small clubs in my area, there is not a single song here I don't like, and there is no song that is better than another as with all his songs they're all outstanding, Teds voice materialises a glass in front of you, his acappelo makes the hair on your stand up like needles and his rendition of zippaddy doodah brings back wonderful memories, its just a shame his version of Green Green Grass was not captured.
Absolutely brilliant as a reminder of a wonderful and sadly missed great man.

This cd features a live recording from Ted Hawkins at the very peak of his powers. For those never fortunate enough to see him this is a demonstration of his rapport with the audience. On the other hand if you were lucky enough to see him then those memories will come flooding back. My only slight reservation is the track listing, a few of my favorites are missing in parrticular "my first one today". On the other hand is therea better love song than Crystal chandeliers? One final question are there any more tapes where this came from?

The great soul singer in London 19 July 2001
By Jostein Berntsen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The soul you find here is both classic, enduring and a revelation to hear, played live in front of a receptive audience. Ted Hawkins was living in England when these songs was recorded live in 1988 in London, and many fans were eager to see and hear him after hearing his records. This live set has not been released until now, and it's another classic from this magnificent soul artist. Ted Hawkins had the most singular voice in soul music in modern years, and he was especially liked in England in the first years after his redicovery(1985-1990). He then hit big in US with the 1994 album 'The Next Hundred Years'. This album is the newest with Ted Hawkins' wonderful music and you can hear some songs not available on other CDs, most notable 'Please come to Boston' and 'Golden Sun'. My favourite songs are 'That's heaven to me', done originally by Sam Cooke and 'I got what I wanted'. This is a solo performance that shines from start to end, and it must have been a joy to have been there that night at the Mean Fiddler Room in London. I think you should treat yourself with this one, and you will feel happy you did.
