4.0 out of 5 stars Clever story with sting in it's tail 1 Jun 2011
By Midnight TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This short story - I read it in less than an hour - describes the thoughts and feelings of June Connor, who is dying of cancer, during the last hours of her life.

There have been a couple of significant incidences in her life involving her husband, Richard, and their daughter, Grace.

By the time I had read about a third of the story, I felt it was just so depressing I wondered why I was bothering to read it. However, I don't like to leave anything unfinished and I had previously enjoyed work by this author - especially Broken - so continued on.

The story did then begin to draw me in and I became intrigued as to the direction it was going to follow.

It certainly has a sting in its tail and I felt the final paragraphs were very cleverly handled.

The story was skillfully crafted and showcases the author's abilities. It should prove a good taster as it displays how an accomplished writer is able to draw even a reticent reader under her spell.

I have pre-ordered Karin's latest offering Fallen due for release in July so did not read the extract included with the download. As mentioned above, I have already read Broken. I'm not sure how much benefit is gained by including these extracts as Kindle owners can download samples anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars A grizzly tale of a woman's last days 29 May 2011
By Curiosity Killed The Bookworm TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Unremarkable Heart is quite a clever bit of marketing for Karin's full length novels, Broken (out in paperback in June) and her newest book, Fallen. You get a new short story for a few pennies and the first chapters of both books to whet your appetite.

Firstly, The Unremarkable Heart is a short story based around the last days of June's life who is dying from lung cancer. The story is a reflection on her life and upcoming death and is grizzly in true Karin Slaughter style. Like many of her characters, June isn't instantly likeable and you may not even sympathise with her by the end but you can understand how her life has unravelled. Certainly worth reading for the price.

The first "page" of Fallen is not the first page of the novel but a synopsis that completely ruins any suspense of what follows. I'd advise you to go straight to the page saying Chapter One if you want to read the extract.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short story 8 July 2012
By Louise
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I must say that overall I enjoyed this book, albeit a little on the short side. Written to a good standard and with a remarkable value for money price. This is my first Karen Slaughter book, and I will certainly give some of her other titles a try.
