Product Description

Nicholas Frith has always considered himself to be about as lucky as the average boy. But while on holiday with his mum, Nicholas accidentally disturbs an ancient tomb and everything changes.

Nicholas falls under an ancient curse and suddenly misfortune, calamity and disaster follow him everywhere! The curse can't touch Nicholas himself, but bad things happen to everyone else around him. Forced to move from school to school, Nicholas loses hope of ever lifting the curse or ever finding someone who will risk being his friend. But one day he meets Fiona - the one person who is prepared to take that risk. Through Fiona's friendship, Nicholas learns to believe in himself and break the curse at last, changing his luck for ever.

I read this book with my eight year old son - it is amazing. Very readable, original and gives exceptional insight into the world of someone who feels 'outside' the norm. It is very touching, funny and on a practical level, very readable for an eight year old boy who still wants to be read to rather than read alone. I want to buy all of Norriss' books now. If he reads this review, congratulations on such wonderful writing.

Andrew Norriss is an underrated children's writer. He has a deft touch when it comes to telling a cracking good story at just the right level. I loved the opening where Nicholas is on holiday with his mum and, dying for the loo in the middle of the countryside, accidentally pees on a grave. He is immediately cursed and a catalogue of disasters ensues. Nicholas can't go anywhere or do anything without causing accidents in his wake. At his third school he meets the calm and competent Fiona, handy with a first aid kit. The catalogue of accidents is funny without being daft and the way Norriss works through Nicholas's dilemma is both charming and moving. This book would be a good one to use with children who feel they 'cause' upsets and for whom life seems to be one big problem after another. The ending was a wee bit drawn out for me but otherwise a huge thumbs up. Boys and girls aged 9 - 11 will love this book.
