This is the sort of album I love: amazing down-tuned guitar work + pounding tribal rhythms + awesome sound production + hypnotic trippy feel + takes some brain rewiring following extended listening to fully appreciate + epic story that unfolds with beauty + never pretentious.
I am a big fan of guitar-magician Gentry Densley from his magnificent work with Iceburn (e.g. Meditavolutions and Power of the Lion) and the beautiful collab with Greg Anderson that was Ascend Ample Fire Within. I was very excited when I got this album. However, I didn't get it straight away (despite being familiar with Murder Of...). I questioned my sanity. I questioned Densley's sanity. It was a real challenge to my brain, guts and psyche. In fact, it was a very similar journey that I had to go on with Sunn's Monoliths and Dimensions.
But I am pleased to report: I am there! And wow, what an achievement. I really cannot recommend this highly enough. The writing and playing is awesome. Although only two musicians, there is a terrific amount of detail to listen to, with some highly impressive guitar, multi-amplifier and throat work by Densley and some wonderful gong and percussion work by Smith. Wonderful job with recording and production by Randall Dunn. Lovely artwork too.
So buy it. Receive it. Unwrap it. Admire it. Strap in. Press play. And go on a sonic journey. Do it again. And again. You there yet? Ah yes, bliss...
Densley: you are the man! I prostrate myself before your amplification. Come play in the UK so we can bask in your genius and sacrifice some goats (humanely) in your honour.
