DVD Description

Explore the furthest reaches of the solar system in an entirely new dimension.

Mankind’s fascination with the stars has always relied on, and fuelled, our passion for technology. From the earliest telescopes, observatories and astronomical charts to satellites, space stations and the Hubble telescope, we have strived to develop the tools to explore the furthest reaches of the night sky. And now, with the development of 3D technology, viewers are invited to take one giant leap into the world of wonder that lies beyond Planet Earth. Visit the rings of Saturn, dive into the Great Red Spot of Jupiter, explore the surface of the Sun and fly  through the Asteroid Belt as you take a tour you’ll never forget through the Seven Wonders of the Solar System.

• The perfect accompaniment to a new 3D-capable home cinema, fusing cutting-edge CGI with the latest scientific research to create a disc that will entertain as much as it educates.

4 Stars, because "The Universe - 7 Wonders of the Solar System in 3D" is the bonus disc from

-> "The Universe Season 5 (with Bonus 3D Disc)" <-

So it is better to buy only "The Universe Season 5 (with Bonus 3D Disc)".

I bought both because I thought they are different, but they are the same and no information about that from Amazon! :(

I have seen this on Sky's 3D channel, and the 3D effects were amazing. The parts showing the CGI 'space ship's' computer panel were shown in several layers, and were astounding. I think the thing to remember with 3D T.V is that the effects are shown as depth (as if looking through a window) rather than things coming out of the screen (although you do get a few things showing this). Of all the 3D films I have seen at home (about a dozen on a Sony Bravia 3D T.V) it's the depth, and the illusion of 3D as distance and perspective that make's 3D great viewing, rather than objects flying out of the screen.

7 Wonders of the Solar System is an attempt to use 3D to show some features of our solar system. Frankly I would have preferred a simple guide to the first 7 planets but instead items such as Enceladus, the asteroid belt and the giant Volcanoe on Mars are explored.

The 3D is a hit and miss affair. Sometimes image depth is astounding and we are treated to deep shots of space that go way back behind the screen. At other times the 3D is so forced you struggle to focus, particularly on background objects that look clear and should be easy to see.

James Cameron would no doubt say that this is due to using side by side Cameras with limited control over the stereo space. In layman's terms it results in images that are VERY difficult to focus on resulting in eye fatigue which is precisely what I experienced with this Bluray disk. For an example try focussing on the man and woman outside the observatory near the telescope and the problem is clear to see. The 3D is so forced that its hard work and it just should not be like this.

Ghosting crops up around asteroids and Saturn too as well as the rather gimmicky space ship although again, the sense of depth on the external shot of the ship is very good indeed.

Its not all bad by any means. There are some computer graphics that represent an digital instrument display that really pop out of the screen by several feet and some shots are very beautiful.

The Sun at times looked good and at others was very hard work to focus on and looked like the pointed end of an egg poking out of the screen. At other times I simply could not focus on it at all.

When all is said and done making 3D movies and programs is an art that at the present time very few people have the necessary skills to pull off. Any studio or broadcasting company wanting to do 3D could do a lot worse that to talk to Cameron-Pace and learn the do's and don'ts when shooting in 3D. They did after all spend years learning how to make a three plus hour movie that doesn't "rip your eyes out of your head".

This 3D Bluray is 40 minutes long and by far THE most tiring 3D experience I have had to date. The production crew have a LOT to learn!

In a word, disappointing.
This blu ray feels like a cheap attempt for the History Channel to make some money via the growing 3d market. Read more

good but expendsive
I enjoyed the feature.
and with out a doubt the 3d effects shown are out of this world.

A little disappointing, but ok
The narration is irritating and repetitive but also detailed enough to be informative

3D images work well and some of the photography is very eye-catching. Read more

ordinary
As one of my first 3D films I found it somewhat ordinary and the grandchildren were bored slow , laboured and not the most exciting 3D effects.
