This album was recorded at a time when openly gay hillbilly music wasn't a common sound and maybe still isn't. To be frank if you're wanting something undemanding you may be well advised to keep looking. However, if you enjoy idiosyncratic outsider music played badly, recorded lo-fi, sung by someone who can't hold too many notes together and who also wants to share a peculiar hillbilly gay country then this may be a good place to stop! I think it's great stuff!

OBscure primitive country folk, I guess.......... 16 Mar 2009
By Chris Carter - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is one of the most idiosyncratic, personal, and downright STRANGE albums I've heard. While a good majority of the songs are in the same musical vein, it's the actual SOUND and execution of this one that astonished me. I have a peculiar fear of dark, grainy black and white photos and trying to listen to this with headphones on in the dark while looking at the cover in my mind was just too creepy ; I had to stop. I can not stress how uncorporate this album is. Peter Grudzien apparently did everything on it : instruments, vocals, engineering (I use that term loosely, but actually I love the sound), etc. It was recorded in 1974. It sounds like he just got a multi-track recorder, and without really knowing 'recording techniques', he committed this stuff to tape. Absolutely one of a kind. This man was a visionary, and you will never hear anything remotely like this. As I say, the only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because most of the songs are country-ish and not to my tastes, but the lyrics are fascinating, and near the end some bizarre synthesizer and backwards voices make an inexplicable appearance. It is a true experience to listen to this all the way through - you actually feel something at the end, unlike many modern cookie-cutter CD's which leave you feeling nothing. I found out about this through a wonderful book called The Acid Archives.

I should also mention the beginning track - the first 50 seconds are solo piano, and that part is so incredibly moving....I've read he's gay, and it seems he channeled all his emotions and all the pride, pain, beauty, fragility.......it's all contained in that first minute of piano. The wondrous thing is that it almost sounds as if he was making it up on the spot. Whew.
