Biography

U2 formed in 1978 after Larry Mullen pinned a 'musicians wanted' ad to the notice board at Dublin's Temple Mount School. Adam Clayton had discovered rock'n'roll as a thirteen year old, buying his first acoustic guitar and then talking his parents into buying him a bass guitar. 'It just sounded good to me. Deep and fat and satisfying.'
From the beginning, U2 were marked out by their passion. "A band… Read more in Amazon's U2 Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

An appreciable leap forward in almost every fashion from the group's first trio of albums, The Unforgettable Fire is its first with the production team of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. And while they take a strong hand in wrestling U2's music out of the mainstream and into a more individualistic area, it's the songs themselves that demand a more subtle approach. Moody gems such as "A Sort of Homecoming" and the entrancing "Bad" set the table for more explosive fare such as "Pride", "Wire" and the title track. This is the album that made U2 a career act, showing that their music could grow by leaps and bounds, even at the hand of another, without sacrificing its soul. --Daniel Durchholz

BBC Review

The Unforgettable Fire was the right record at the right time. U2 had ended their first phase of flag-waving sincerity with the live mini-album Under A Blood Red Sky and its accompanying long-form video, Live At Red Rocks. Their preceding album, War, was a self-assured update of their early melodic template of spiky rock and searing anthems.

Instead of repeating their formula they enlisted the production skills of ex- Roxy Music polymath Brian Eno and young Canadian Daniel Lanois. Island boss Chris Blackwell tried to dissuade the group from using the duo, but they pressed ahead. Enrolling Eno brought the band a credibility they may never have gained; in turn, they gave Eno his largest audience ever.

The nagging insistency of opener, A Sort Of Homecoming, signals this new direction - all slightly out-of-focus, sketchy, yet strangely beguiling. However, instead of the producers trying wholesale to meddle with the existing formulas, both parties enhanced each other's work, which added a looseness and ambiance to the groove. This is none more evident than on the title track, which has a sleek suppleness to it, as previously unheard on their work, while still unmistakably being U2. However, they knew not to alienate too much - the album's first single, Pride (In The Name Of Love), is still arguably U2's greatest stadium sing-along.

It was ostensibly promoting this album that U2 played their most important gig ever, Live Aid, showcasing the resolutely uncommercial Bad - a song about heroin addiction that Bono has described as being Van Morrison crossed with German electronica - the band became, alongside Queen, the talking point of the day.

U2 would never be the same again. Although often overshadowed by its successor, The Joshua Tree, The Unforgettable Fire is a record of great, moving beauty. --Daryl Easlea

Timeless sound 15 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is extraordinary album, and with this issue you''ll get the full of it. Comparing this remastered album with the first CD release, there is almost unbelievable difference in sound presentation. With this remastering you are about to feel the real U2 and their strength at the very beginning of their quest for the sound space that is spreading all the time. The origins of U2 are within this album and this is certainly one of the reference points in the career of the biggest band in the world. Absolutely recommended.

Timeless masterpiece 20 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This was the first U2 album I heard back in the mid 80s and I was deeply attached to it. I must have listened to it hundreds of times, and yet it still sounds fresh now in 2001.

I followed them avidly until about 1990 until I began to lose interest. For me they have never bettered this album. Obviously Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois got the band to produce something special (interestingly I also love Eno's Apollo album which he recorded at this time - some of it rubs off here)

Brilliant!! U2 are exceptional at all times, but they outdid themselves with The Unforgettable Fire. This CD really has to be up in the top10 of all time. It is really unforgettable! Unless you have been under a rock for the past 15 years, you've heard "Pride - In The Name of Love". A stirring classic which reaches right into your soul. "The Unforgettable Fire" and "Bad" are right up there too. Brilliantly unique sounds from from the Irish masters. If you like U2 or are simply a fan of deep, rich meaningfulmusic, then this is one for you!!!

Forgettable fire.
This is typical U2 - clunky guitars, Neanderthal drumming, fumbling bass and illiterate lyrics. How can a band with so little talent be so successful? Read more
