Biography

For the first time in his life, Brother Ali has been enjoying some day-to-day stability. Gone is the turbulent marriage to his first wife, homelessness, and the associated drama—all of which Ali openly documented on his last LP, The Undisputed Truth.

His new album, Us, is a progression that will establish Brother Ali as one of Hip Hop’s most enduring figures. While ... Read more in Amazon's Brother Ali Store

Having read the previous solitary review of this album, i felt compelled to write my own opinions on this LP. Now, this is not an exercise in opinion bashing, but i feel that any album needs multiple perspectives shone upon it before one can judge whether it will suit their musical taste (based on the reviews, that is). So let me begin...

Musically, as with his previous effort, Ali is once again teamed with Atmosphere's Ant for supply of beats. Now this is no bad thing, Ant has come a long way from his gloomy, dark often simplistic beats of early atmosphere days. From reggae, rock and funk, there are plenty of musical influences in each track - enough diversity to keep even the most eclectic ear enticed. Ant keeps the beats nicely suited to the tone of each song, perfectly capturing the many different atmospheres conveyed by the brother's lyrics.

Now onto the man himself. Opening with an absolute banger, Ali brings so much energy, passion and conviction it's as if though he's jumping out of the speakers and is screaming his words right in your face. Passion is one thing Ali has in abundance, he obviously loves what he does, and does it just for the love. His songs speak from his heart, and you can tell more than ever before (!!!!) that he has spent a lot of time ensuring that this is a thoughtful, carefully crafted album. However, ali still doesn't lose the his confident swagger that he previously showcased on earlier records. He's still cocky where it is deserved, but not in a cringe-worthy manner that so many sub-par rappers seem to get caught up in. In order to keep soe of the mystery of the album, i will not go further into details of individual songs except to make a final statement that this is an absolutely superb album and one of 2007's best!

This album is not perfect, and some tracks slightly miss the mark for me. But that being said, it does contain gems of near perfection, such as Truth Is, Freedom Aint Free, Letter From The Government and Uncle Sam Goddamn. Listen to any one of these and then try to tell me that Brother Ali isn't one of the greatest emcees of recent times. The beats too are impressive, and incorporate Reggae and Rock vibes. His lyrics alternate between righteous indignation with a political edge, battle raps that show humour and intelligence rather than just bigheadedness, and deep soul-searching confessionals. Like the other reviewer, I would probably give this a 4.5 out of 5 if I could. A fantastic addition to any real hip-hop lover's collection.

This is the first album i have bought by brother ali and i must say i think this is a chill out smokin classic. just sit back relax and smoke away to this master peice. fits well back to back with some abstract rude in my opinon and moka only lime green. i think this a modern day classic im definatley going to be going to be buying his back catalog. this album is certainly not pop but nice chilled out vibe i cant turn it off at the moment great album . go out and buy from a real hip hop head this is well worth a listen.
