Review

Praise for the previous edition:

"In its third edition, The Underwater Photographer has evolved to become almost a standard work of reference. Martin Edge has developed his writing skills over the years, and we recommend this volume for anyone pursuing the now-less-than black art of underwater photography, especially with digital image-gathering in mind."--DIVE MAGAZINE PUBLICATION OF THE YEAR

"..let us just say that this is THE best underwater photo technique book on the market... PERIOD!" --DIVER magazine

It is the many photographs I have seen taken by this man which make me realise I still have a long way to go as far as mastering the art of underwater photography is concerned.

Time was when every newly trained scuba diver would talk about the diving facility they are going to open now that they have learned to dive. Not so any more. Today, they are more conscious of the underwater environment and are keen to progress on to underwater photography. Well this is where that journey towards taking successful pictures begins. Martin Edge has mastered the art of underwater photography and has that indefinable knack of being able to teach others what he knows - and very successfully indeed.

So, if you are contemplating buying your first underwater camera - or if you have already done so, then get a copy of this book and do 2 things. Firstly, read it. Then wait a week and read it again! My own photographs were first published in 1974 and my first underwater pictures in 1979. Right now, my work has appeared every single month for the past 7 years. Yet I have still learned a lot from this book.

This must be amongst the best books on the subject. I works as a comprehensive reference and is well worth reading from chapter one to the end. As a land photographer, this book has already saved me from spending money on the wrong kit and given me a structured path to becoming a good underwater photographer.

I have read many times the second and third editions, and having them at your bookshelf makes you ask yourself if buying the fourth edition would be worth.
But comming from Martin, that question has a clear answer: GET IT!.
I was waiting for the Spanish translation but could not wait. I have gone through it and it's clearly not disapointing.
A few reasons for previous editions owners:
* Martin gives this time clear directions on what he does. Always preceed by a warning "This is what I do, may be it's not the standard way, but it's my way". And clearly many (or all) suggestions make sense.
* The book brings Alex Mustard's work. It looks their collaboration in organizing trips, and wetpixel's posts it's not the only thing they share.
* There are clearer directions on how to improve your pictures on your computer.

For first time potential readers, some points:
* If you have not read any book from Martin, then you are really new in UW Photography. Get It!
* Read it
* Re-Read it
* Re-Read it, and wait until next Martin's edition.

Enjoy it as much as I've done!

Excellent book
Very good book, covering all the info we needed. My only comment is that its a large book, and therefore too large to travel with.
