Book Description

From the author of the best-selling novel Paddy Indian comes the story of an unravelling marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Shankar, a typical, traditional, South Indian couple in their late fifties, have been married in reasonable harmony for 26 years. Balu Shankar has dominated the marriage without any serious challenge, both he and his wife Janaki playing their respective roles perfectly, as expected of them. But on a 16-day coach tour across Europe, the first stitch in their life together slips, and the whole thing begins to unravel. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I read this book non-stop cover to cover! It is a touchingly sweet voyage of discovery in an arranged marriage 30 years on through the eyes of both partners. Despite the books cover suggesting that it is "a dark and comic account of the disintergration of a marriage" it is infact a book that leaves you liking the characters and involves you in this believable account of the learning curve that 2 people find themselves on in relation to their own and the others wants and needs, and their marriage. If anything it is an affirmation not a disintergration of the institution of marriage.

The Uncoupling 25 Jan 2003
Format:Paperback
The Uncoupling, Madhavan's second novel is a very entertaining read. The character development of the main protagonists, Balu and Janaki Shankar, as their marriage changes irrevocably, is skilfully handled. And anyone who has ever taken a coach tour with complete strangers will recognise and be amused by the atmosphere that Madhavan deftly recreates.

Cauvery Madhavans observations on marriage breakdown are all the finer for her lack of shrill invective usually accompanying these stories. She subtly drew me in so that before I knew it I was harboring some sympathies for the male protaganist despite his ignorance of the female species! Keep up the good work, I can't wait for the next one.
