When the position of 'Wizard of Greyfell' passes from father to son, greed and dark desires soon threaten to end the great wizarding line...The feral cats of Greyfell Colony have enjoyed a long and happy association with the wizarding family, providing it with a new companion every seventh year. The lucky cat is trained by retired familiars in preparation for its new role. When the time comes for the exchange, the chosen one then makes a long and difficult trek across the fells to join its new master. However, when the latest familiar turns up to take his place, he is in for a shock. The new wizard is not at all as he expected and soon the magic that has protected moorland creatures and villagers alike, is in jeopardy. The task of saving the wizard from his own greed then falls to a most unlikely member of the colony...!

More About the Author

Gavin Rees-Jones grew up in Warwickshire but now lives in the Welsh Marches where the rich local history and diverse landscape provide constant inspiration for his novels. Gavin explains that his goal is to write books for all children, whether they are 8 or 80 years old. By combining his facination with the natural world and the endless posibilities of science fiction and fantasy writing, he revisits the origins of myth and legend to reveal the unexpected hidden within the mundane. His books evoke mystery and invite readers to re-examine the things around them with renewed curiosity and reconnect with their inner "what if". Gavin also has plans to broaden his range of books into novels tailored to an adult audience. With them, he hopes to bring a little mystery and suspense to a reader gorup more suited to the darker side of fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cats, Wizards and Magic.....whats not to love? 14 May 2013
I had this book given to me and what delicious delights I discovered inside.
Gavin Rees-Jones walks that fine line between adult and child fiction that amuses and delights both equally! I sat down to read the first page and emerged half a day later and I don't even have children!!
Wizards, cats, charm, whimsy and mayhem.....whats not to love? My Dad would have liked this in our story time library fact he still would now.
A great read for young and old and clearly only the beginning of this wizards adventures. I loved this gift and already have a few recipients in mind to send it to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Read 23 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very entertaining even for almost grown-ups of 80 years young. Left with the feeling this is the first book
in a series yet to be written! Ideal for children to read or be read to from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of charm and magic 8 Dec 2012
I have just read a book from the relatively new author, Gavin Rees-Jones, titled, "The un-familiar cat". Clearly intended to be a children's book, to my delight it was an instant hit with my friends and me, before it was passed on to our children. It is filled with charming characters both human and animal, who tell the wonderful story from their point of view. It is funny, emotional, brilliantly descriptive and totally absorbing. It had a rare quality these days, the ability to draw you into the story and become a part of the tale. I can't understand why I haven't heard more about the author and his books but I will be watching for the sequel closely. I have recommended it to all my friends and told them you really can't judge a book by its cover; this one is for children of all ages.
