Product Description

His captive has issued a most unusual ultimatum. . .

He must make love to her . . .

Little does he know that giving her what she needs may bind him to her forever . . .

Rystani star pilot Xander is willing to use unusual methods, no matter how unorthodox, to save the galaxy from a deadly virus. He's already resorted to kidnapping bio-geneticist Alara Calladar in the hopes that her psi-talent of identifying DNA will help find a cure to save both their worlds.
But now his sworn enemy has revealed that her biology requires her to periodically regenerate her cells by making love or she'll die. Really die.
Xander is stunned, yet fascinated, by her admission and wonders what other secrets she's keeping. While he has little choice but to agree to trade his life-saving love making for her psi powers, he's determined to keep an emotional distance. No way is he falling for her, a woman from a race who invaded and occupies his home world.
Soon their desperate bargain becomes a turbulent but all-consuming passion. Her body isn't just rejuvenating each time they make love, it's adapting to his on a genetic level. Before long she will be unable to make love to any man but Xander.
Xander resists becoming her conquest, but not even the dangerous mission can distract him from Alara's appeal. She's just the kind of woman he admires. Intelligent, resourceful, and passionate. If only he trusted her. If only she wasn't the enemy. If only his heart didn't have a mind of its own.
When together they must merge their talents to fight the most powerful forces in the galaxy, will trust win out, or will they lose each other forever?
The much-awaited sequel to The Challenge and The Dare.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Sci-Fi Romance 1 Jun 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback
My first experience of Susan Kearney books was a major plus. I've been searching for another talented sci-fi romance author since Catherine Spangler's last book came out (i.e. Shadow Fires, Shadow Crossing, etc.) and Kearney's blend of seductive romance and colorful worlds and characters is just what I've been seeking. Well, seek and you shall find an action packed tale of survival of the fittest and some pretty hot and steamy love.

Alara is an Endekian female, a women literally enslaved to her biology - one that forces her into a period called boktai where she must have sex in order to regenerate her cells. This is a condition that Alara detests since there is no choice involved. Any man that happens to be near is an excrutiating temptation for her. She is a brilliant scientist though and has dedicated her research to finding a way of suppressing the boktai curse. When Rystani warrior Xander comes in, demanding she accompany him to aid in his quest to find a cure to a deadly disease, she is horrified by this enemy of her people. When Alara won't cooperate, needing to get away from him because of her downward spiral into boktai, Xander takes matters into hand and kidnaps her. Once Xander realizes her situation he steps in and assumes the role of protector for Alara, even if it means mating with an enemy. More is at stake than their differences for billions are at risk from this deadly disease.

With the addition of several excellent secondary characters, brilliant world-building and an interesting subplot "The Ultimatum" made for a great read. Kearney inserts an underlying message of the need for social equality into the story and Xander's crew exemplifies this concept with the different cultures and people represented in it.

Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
When the human race begins to die out, it is believed to be a result of the planet’s heavy pollution. After Tessa (from The Challenge”) falls ill, Xander (the young Rystani warrior whose life Tessa saved) agrees to find the “Perceptive Ones” in the hopes that they may hold a cure. Unfortunately as other species fall ill, it is realised that this plague threatens millions of lives within countless galaxies, slowly killing off all human, humanoid and plant life. When it is discovered that this virus was introduced by the Zin, the deadly enemies of the Perceptive Ones, Xander and his crew agree they must do everything possible to find a cure to save all known life forms.
As the virus attacks at molecular level, Xander feels Dr Alara Calladar; a hated Endekian, can help as she has the ability to view DNA with her naked eye. Although Xander rightfully blames Endekians for the death of his mother and the torture he underwent when they invaded his homeworld, he realises Alara may be his only help. Unfortunately as an Endekian female, Alara is forbidden to leave the planet; however an exchange is made and Kirek (the child born in hyperspace and now on the cusp of manhood) remains a hostage on Endeki whilst Alara helps find a cure for the plague. But the Endekians guard a closely kept secret, the physiology of its females. Every other year a mature woman will enter Boktai, a time when all logic and rationalisation is replaced with overwhelming lust towards any male. Alara bitterly hates the fact that her body's overwhelming desire for a male overules her mind during this period and always leaves it to the last possible moment before finding a bed partner, an act needed to regenerate her cells.
