Product Description

Product Description

This title is a companion to Channel Four's programme, "Time Team" and includes all the sites excavated up to the publication date. These sites and the archaeological treasures they have yielded serve as a starting point for a quirky, yet fascinating view of British history. Most of us can name at least a few of the major events, places and people of British history, but what is less certain is when these events occurred. Locating them in our mental time line is often difficult. Did the Saxons come before of after the Romans? Did the Black Death and the Plague happen at the same time? When did Charles I lose his head or the members of the Light Brigade charge to their death. Illustrated with over 200 images, the book draws on the expertise of "Time Team" contributors, making the content appealingly idiosyncratic. In addition to information about all the sites shown in the series, five digs will be covered using photo stories, to show a more thorough picture of how the team work, as well as building up a picture of the variety of British History.

If you're a fan of 'Time Team' and enjoy the exploits, expertise and eccentricities of Mick, Phil, Tony, Carenza and company, then you really ought to have a copy of this on your bookshelf. Although it doesn't go into as much detail about any particular dig or site as some of the other 'Time Team' books, it ties all their digs and programmes into a cohesive timeline through history. Plenty of pictures and anecdotes, and a delight to dip into when there's no 'Time Team' on the box...

Calling this 'an alternative history of Britain' is, perhaps, a bit pretentious but it is a book which should grace the shelves of any serious historian. An easy read but full of serious work.

This book is well written, in a style that allows even the most ignorant to gain a greater understanding of the major events in world history and to place them in chronological relation to others. Relating these to factual finds in the excellent Time Team programme simply makes history real, tangible and accessible to all. I would recommend this book to children, parents and grandparents!
