Even among football fans, there are many who have not heard of Only an Excuse. This is probably because they live in England.
Nevertheless, this is the funniest football programme ever made. It skewers the biggest names in Scottish football - English fans will recognise Sir Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and many more - from old favourites like Frank McAvennie and Jim White to newer ones like Gordon Strachan and Martin O'Neill (not Scottish as such, but...)
Add a few politicians (Gorgeous George Galloway on 'Talk Pish'; Dr John Reid), English players who cannot be ignored like Wayne Rooney and journalists in need of a swift come-uppance and this cauldron of Caledonian comedy is complete.
On a personal note, having met and worked with several of those portrayed here, I was just waiting for them to turn into Jonathan Watson's skilled impressions. Alas, Walter Smith never said 'obviously, particularly' and Tommy Burns didn't draw out his 'er's for quite as long as he does on the programme. I wish they had. When I wrote my book with Pat Nevin, the programme hadn't done him yet. Now it has. Like many of Spitting Image's victims, I suspect he's secretly rather chuffed.
