Book Description

29 April 2004
Using the 'wise woman' tradition of the power of herbs and plants to answer your skin's problems, this book is brimming with over eighty enticing recipes for home beauty treatments, with advice on how to grow and harvest the required ingredients from your own garden, in a way that is 100 per cent organic. The introduction will explain the natural benefits of plants and herbs, as well as providing practical advice on getting started with your own cosmetics: weighing, measuring, equipment, storage. The first recipes are divided by skin types, with practical, but delicious sounding recipes, like Apricot Softening Mask, Fennel and Elderflower Cleansing Lotion and Aloe Vera Lip-Healer. Following these are remedies for other parts of the body including hair treatments, hand creams, bath tonics, body buffers and even make up. In addition, there are details on acupressure massage techniques, which complement natural remedies, and herbal tea recipes that rejuvenate tired skin and tired minds. Scattered throughout the book are 'plant portraits' which look at the beneficial properties of certain plants, and at the back there is an 'Organic Directory' with helpful on-line and mail order sources for natural products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Natural Wonder! 17 Jun 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I saw this book advertised and thought "ooh that could be interesting", and have just got round to treating myself. And I must say that I was not disappointed!
The book itself looks good sitting on my desk, and the recipes inside are even better! There are about 100 recipes all divided into different sections for face and then skin type, body, trouble shooters, hair and make-up, and I must say they all sound divine! Ingredients are not outrageously difficult to get hold of, or expensive like a lot of similar books are, and information is given about different herbs and plants that are used in recipes, and some of their uses. The back of the book also contains information on how to do certain processes, other various "natural wonder products" and equipment that could be useful for making your own cosmetics! There is also a great stockist list at the back of the book, where you can get almost all of the items required and various organic cosmetics that are readily available, most of which have great websites which the author recommends.
This book has inspired me to begin making my own cosmetics and has opened my eyes as to what wonders nature has in store. I have always been one to use as natural products as I can but this takes it one step further - organic DIY!
I would really recommend this book to anyone who is interested in creating their own cosmetics, and it would make a lovely gift for someone. Now I am off to make a delicious sounding face mask...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book! 20 Nov 2004
Format:Paperback
This book is great! Having never made cosmetics before, I bought a range of books and this one is by far the best. It has recipies suitable for face, body, hair, etc. and a good selection of facial products for different skin types. The recipies given are imaginative, unusual and effective. I'd also recommend 'Natural Health and Body Care' by Neals Yard Rememdies, but their recipies are (in my opinion) more basic than Ms Fairley's.
The book is also visually well designed, with beautiful use of colour and good layouts. Would make an excellent present for anyone interested in making their own cosmetic products

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!!!!!! 24 Oct 2008
Format:Paperback
I LOVE this book!! I've never tried making anything like this before and was a bit weary about how to go about it. I bought it on the basis of the other reviews and they weren't wrong. It's well written, nicely photographed and laid out with easy to follow receipes. My canadian friend told me about the link between parabens and breast cancer and this got me thinking about making something natural for myself.

I've had the book for a couple of weeks now & so far have made...shampoo, hair rinse, lip gloss, body butter & a cleanser! :) I have a feeling I might end up making everything in the book because it's so easy to follow. There's some great tips at the back and suggestions of different ingredients that could be used instead. And, there's a list of websites for info and supplies. I have got 90% of my ingredients from E'bay of all places!! The essential oils are less than half the price of the ones in the shops and it's a lot easier than trudging round health food shops etc trying to find the ingredients.

I would definitely recommend this to everyone, I'm no great cook or beauty guru so if I can manage to create these great products than anyone can!! :D

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Book.. But... 8 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is a great basic book for learning about the natural skincare world and get an introduction to the wonderful world of herbs, essential oils, etc... The information is presented beautifully and it has inspired me to explore making my own products - after nearly 10 years of using only Aubrey Organics. HOWEVER, there is quite a lot of technical information missing from the recipes! Making creams and lotions for example can be easy with the right ingredients and equipment, but requires more in-depth explanation about the technicalities of putting it together - it's easy to get it very wrong and never want to try it again! I guess the BIGGEST FAULT of this book is that it does not inform readers that they need to use an EMULSIFIER in order to get water and oil binding together in creams, lotions and other similar products. Without the emulsifier, water and oil WILL SEPARATE and the resulting cream will be a nightmare to use! Also, Beeswax is good to get consistency in cream-based products, but it can be quite heavy (especially on the face) and there are other alternatives. All in all though, a good reference book to have if you are interested in the subject and just want to make products for your own use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! 12 May 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is the first time I've been inspired to write a review of any book I've read, but for any lay person wanting to experiment with making their own products this book is a must! Initially a little daunted at the prospect of branching out into making my own products I found this book easy to use, beautifully laid out, and recipes very easy to follow. Having successfully produced my own face cream and toner within a matter of hours I can't wait to try out more of the recipies. The majority of the ingredients aren't difficult to get a hold of, and formulas are easily adapted to meet your own needs. If you buy one book on making your own products it has to be this one!
