We all know that consciousness comes out of biology and awareness comes out of consciousness. This is obvious and doesn't need any explanation. So in the beginning there is physics, then the play of atoms produces biology and then, through the play of chemical forces, consciousness happens and we are then aware and call this 'awareness'. This is why scientists call consciousness an 'epiphenomenon' and when you die, the awareness stitches off like a light bulb.
The opposite view would is that in the beginning there is pure awareness, even before physics, there is this awareness and physics wrapped around pure awareness and then biology forms around physics, which is an epiphenomenon of the pure awareness. So biology is wrapping around consciousness, rather than consciousness coming from biology. So a man who convinces himself of this would say that he is unborn. Biology wraps around awareness and bodies are born and grow and die but the awareness is always in the background, undiluted and just there, all of the time!
Maharaj Nisargadatta was convinced of the second version. He was an awakened man. Now you and I would be considered crazy if we told our friends and family the truths that Maharaj Nisargadatta spoke. But I read this book and Nisargaddata is not pulling any legs her because he was convinced that he is unborn and so the questions asked are clever but Maharaj has an answer to all of them!!! Even if he was crazy, the things he was saying are as deep and solid as anything found in the libraries of smart sayings.
This book could well be a hoax, but I doubt that any hoaxer could write the things spoken from the mouth of this man. You really have to see things his way to talk like that, you see. The questioners in this book are very intelligent and one thinks 'oh know, Maharaj Nisargadatta has met his match now', but he says a brilliant thing all of the time because he has glimpsed an aspect that you and I seem to be blind to.
The awakened one, you see, is not a sleeper, like you and me, he's not a teacher; let alone a preacher; neither a prophet nor looking to profit. He isn't a snake, or an obvious fake; he is awake!
