Ultimate Knowledge 22 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
Unlike the first book produced on Nisargadatta, "I AM THAT" which was stripped bare of all religious trappings, the discussions recorded in "The Ultimate Medicine" between Nisargadatta and his visitors have many more references to Hindu terminology and concepts. I would therefore recommend that anyone new to Nisargadatta's teachings begin with "I AM THAT".

Something I found very interesting in this book were the discussions that centered around one understanding one's birth, which is not really discussed in "I AM THAT". Nisargadatta says several times that all will be clear when one can, understand, experientially, (through meditation), how this consciousness came about, how birth came about. He talks a lot about consciousness, and the lifeforce, and explains how the idea of God arises. It compliments I AM THAT, giving you a slightly different angle on the same thing. The discourses tend to be much longer, and questions shorter.

The book was written shortly before Nisargadatta died from cancer, while he was suffering from the illness. His comments concerning this illness are also something to ponder over.

This is really a unique and important book, and anyone who seeks enlightenment through *knowledge* should look at this and Nisargadatta's other books. You won't find it more clearly expressed by anyone. Imagine a Zen Buddhist, who, instead of speaking in riddles, just explains clearly what it all is, and what to do.

There's no nonsense in this book. He was a unique teacher, and we're fortunate indeed to have his teachings available in book form like this.

pure awareness at large 30 April 2012
Format:Paperback
We all know that consciousness comes out of biology and awareness comes out of consciousness. This is obvious and doesn't need any explanation. So in the beginning there is physics, then the play of atoms produces biology and then, through the play of chemical forces, consciousness happens and we are then aware and call this 'awareness'. This is why scientists call consciousness an 'epiphenomenon' and when you die, the awareness stitches off like a light bulb.

The opposite view would is that in the beginning there is pure awareness, even before physics, there is this awareness and physics wrapped around pure awareness and then biology forms around physics, which is an epiphenomenon of the pure awareness. So biology is wrapping around consciousness, rather than consciousness coming from biology. So a man who convinces himself of this would say that he is unborn. Biology wraps around awareness and bodies are born and grow and die but the awareness is always in the background, undiluted and just there, all of the time!

Maharaj Nisargadatta was convinced of the second version. He was an awakened man. Now you and I would be considered crazy if we told our friends and family the truths that Maharaj Nisargadatta spoke. But I read this book and Nisargaddata is not pulling any legs her because he was convinced that he is unborn and so the questions asked are clever but Maharaj has an answer to all of them!!! Even if he was crazy, the things he was saying are as deep and solid as anything found in the libraries of smart sayings.

This book could well be a hoax, but I doubt that any hoaxer could write the things spoken from the mouth of this man. You really have to see things his way to talk like that, you see. The questioners in this book are very intelligent and one thinks 'oh know, Maharaj Nisargadatta has met his match now', but he says a brilliant thing all of the time because he has glimpsed an aspect that you and I seem to be blind to.

The awakened one, you see, is not a sleeper, like you and me, he's not a teacher; let alone a preacher; neither a prophet nor looking to profit. He isn't a snake, or an obvious fake; he is awake!
