Product Description

Review

"Honestly, this is probably the best book ever produced on alcohol... every bartender who takes the craft seriously should start reading this book as soon as possible!" The World of Spirits and Cocktails by Andre Domine (h.f. ullmann) This book actually came out five years ago, but I was just made aware of it recently. Honestly, this is probably the best book ever produced on alcohol. You will learn more from this book about everything from brandies to whiskies to rums to fortified wines than you thought possible. Six hundred pages are given over to the subject, and every page is beautifully decorated with full-color photographs and reproductions of spirit related art. An introduction to the history of both alcohol and cocktails takes up the first one hundred pages, and the last one hundred are given over to cocktails and their recipes. If there was a college level course on liquor and bartending, this would be its textbook. Perhaps my only criticism is that the recipes are not user-friendly for Americans (it has been translated from German), as many of them call for tablespoons and barspoons of liquor rather than ounces. That aside, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Every bartender who takes the craft seriously should start reading this book as soon as possible! I really must say, this is one of the BEST bar books ive had, couldnt be more happier with it. Highly reccommended and i even think most of my friends will be getting one of these for Christmas.
what i didnt know about a bar before, i certainly do now and can not wait to start putting my new knowledge into practise.
In depth and covers every aspect you could want, and what even more useul it tells you about each drink individually. Along with great colour and many images, id say it was the Bar Bible!
A must have for anyone who likes their cocktails!!!

This large hard back book is less a bar book and more a detailed guide to an extensive range of spirits and other alcoholic and non alchoholic drinks. It includes some recipes but most of the book is dedicated to giving very interesting specialist information about the production, history and qualities of different drinks.

state-of-the-art work on spirits from around the world for reference, learning, and enjoyment 7 Aug. 2011
By Henry Berry - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
The "Ultimate" of the title is not in this case hyperbolic. And to say the book is encyclopedic, though this is true, is to put it in a category of many other voluminous books. With this book, its comprehensiveness, organization, and its visual content want to be stressed. It's a state-of-the-art reference with an art book appeal, though smaller. Left out on a counter or table, one seeing it is drawn to it out of curiosity and its visual promise. "State-of-the-art" applies because "spirits"--whiskeys, bourbons, rums, liqueurs, vermouths, cognacs, flavored brandies, fortified wines, and others--are not the defined group of alcohols many may assume. While many are ancient, new ones are coming up all the time from from the invention of distilleries and to meet changing tastes around the world. The text mostly by Domine who did the bulk of the research involving worldwide travel with ancillary chapters by others relates the origins and histories including migration of the older spirits; while with the newer spirits, many from recent decades with the mixing of cultures in globalization, developments in regional cultures, usually business activity, and marketing ideas are noted. All of this is accompanied by bountiful and diversified color photos on nearly every page. multishaped bottles of the numerous spirits, farm fields, close-ups of plants, distillery equipment, maps, vintage advertising, and multicolored cocktails are all parts of this.

The reader could be overwhelmed by the wealth of content and its colorful and informative detail but for the detailed Contents and five indexes of people, places, subject, spirits and producers, and cocktails. Some readers will find the three-page Glossary is helpful too as an introduction with its translations of foreign terms, names for pieces of equipment and bar utensils, and names for general categories of spirits.
The book brings the world of spirits to the same level of interest and appeal as outstanding books on wines and beers have. And as others have regarding wines and beers, many will be inspired to rewardingly explore this world with this authoritative, reliable work as a guide.

Great reference and overview 26 Jan. 2012

As a wine and spirits professional, I find this book to be an excellent resource when needing reminders or to learn about some product that is rare and has not come up previously in my studies or in my work. It's not going to make you a whiskey expert, or gin or what have you, but if you need to know a little about a lot - this is great.

Alright but poorly handled 18 Aug. 2013
By Nicole Flatgard - Published on Amazon.com

The book is new and for the most part what I expected. The biggest problem is that it looks like it was thrown around on the way here. The edges of the thick hard cover are all bent up on every side. Other than that I am happy.

My husband bought this book to study for his Sommelier Exam, but it has a plethora of information in it, way more than either of us had expected. I'll be reading it once he is through.
This IS the ULTIMATE spirits book! 30 Oct. 2013

This really is a massive… and heavy volume that cover every known and many obscure spirits. It is great, fun reading for both aficionado and industry professional. I highly recommend it.
