5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to be a comic - READ IT! 26 July 2013
By Tommy Moore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
(Just so you know where I'm coming from, been a full time comic for 40 years. Clubs, Colleges, Corporates, Cruises, Resorts, Casinos, TV, Radio, as well as a booker and producer) ... For 5 years I taught Stand-up Comedy at Temple University in Philadelphia ... so, having said that...
This is one of the 5 best books on comedy ever written. If you want to work comedy clubs, you need this book. It will give you solid advice and quirky tips that will shine a light on
the trip you are about to take. Read it with a high-lighter in hand, there are parts you will want to refer back to in the future. Cleverly organized with a time line going from beginner to mc, to middle, to closing act, it's an easy read with a reasonable progression. Don't try to take it all in a once. There's a lot here. And it's seasoned with a degree of angst (that you'd better be aware of before starting your comedy career). But if you're going to start, or progress, in your comedy career, I repeat, you NEED this book. - Tommy Moore

1.0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup for the Comedian's Soul 6 Oct 2009
By Ray Price - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Comedy "how to" books come in many flavors. They all seem to contain the same information but they differ on where they put their emphasis. This book emphasizes the "social" aspect of becoming a stand-up comedian. The book even encourages young comedians to join the staff of a comedy club or attach oneself to a more experienced comedian as a way of advancing your comedy career. In my experience, these activities lead to derivative, cookie cutter, mediocre comedians.

The book also creates artificial time tables, locking comedians' skill to the number of years they've been doing stand-up, not the number and diversity of the audience they have experienced.

Factual errors exist as well, including the claim that the Ice House is the oldest comedy club in the United States. (Heck, I know 1 club in Ohio that has been in business far longer, and I don't get out very much).

I don't know if it was the fact that the author was female or that so many of the quotes from comedians came from a female comedian, but to me, the book reads more like "Chicken Soup for the Comedian's Soul" than anything which is likely to help you understand the comedy business.
