5.0 out of 5 stars Formerly known as "The Book," - 1200 great songs 25 Jun 1997
By A Customer
Format:Plastic Comb
I learned the hard way that this was formerly known as "The Book," and, except for the cover, the "Ultimate Fake Book" I bought is exactly the same as my copy of "The Book." Not to worry - it will make a great present for somebody.
All of the Hal Leonard "Ultimate" fake books are excellent, but this one and "The Best Fake Book Ever" are particularly generous, with lyrics, chords, and melody for some 1200 songs each. The variety is phenomenal - from Broadway to Folk to Big Band to current hits. My friends and I like to gather around a fake book and sing the night away. I can't think of a better way to spend an evening.
One complaint other than the mixup with the other book - the paperback cover and plastic looseleaf binding are a bit flimsy for a book this big.

3.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate? 26 Oct 2007
Format:Plastic Comb
It's a large collection of tunes, but two points limit the book's usefulness for me (amateur guitarist and pianist playing occasionally in jazz and rock/pop bands).
1) It covers all genres, from early jazz to country, so it cannot be comprehensive in any genre. Even for a jazz beginner the 100 or so jazz tunes will quickly be insufficient, and a much better collection like the same publisher's Real Book will be needed. For 80/90-ies pop the selection is minimal. The best coverage is probably in broadway and movie/tv hits, which make up about half of the songs in the book.
2) 1200 songs in 800 pages means that they have been highly compressed. Every other page contains 2 songs: small fontsize, 12 staffs per page, highly simplified chords and melody. Impossible to read on stage, so you end up having to cut and paste with photocopiers or scanners to create something readable.

5.0 out of 5 stars useful and fun 4 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Plastic Comb
Twelve hundred songs is not so many songs that you can expect of find all your favorites, but this is a very useful book to have around for gigging, for sight-singing, for studying the history of popular music, and--most important--for fun.

Also recommended: PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good resource book, but not a primary source for songs.
With 1200 songs you would imagine this has got to have it all. That's what I thought. Because it tries to be all songs for all people, it winds up having (for me) very few songs... Read more
