Product Description

Album Description

The distinctive sound of The Seekers, with their tautly harmonised vocals and catchy folk arrangements, could only be the product of one decade: the 60s. The blurring of moral codes and the increased levelling-out of gender roles at this time created an atmosphere of hedonistic excitement, leading to the decade's `swinging' nickname, yet there remained, in some quarters at least, a certain naivety, a wide-eyed, innocent, peace-loving hope, absent from much of the music of later decades. It is this aspect of 60s music that characterises the output of The Seekers, whose popularity was such that they even rivalled the raw, raunchy blues of The Rolling Stones and the innovative songs of The Beatles in the mid-60s tussle for chart supremacy.

This 2CD set features a large proportion of their repertoire and all of their biggest hits, including "I'll Never Find Another You", "The Carnival Is Over", "A World Of Our Own" and "Georgy Girl".

Seek no further 22 May 2009
By D. Elliott TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
As a folk-influenced group The Seekers existed before Judith Durham joined in 1962 and it struggled along in various combinations after she left in 1968 to return to jazz singing. Her magnificent presence is captured on all the 1960s recordings of `The Ultimate Collection'. Many singles and albums by The Seekers have subsequently been re-mastered for CDs, some with title claims to be "the very best", "complete" or "simply the best". All contain some of The Seekers' hits, but the 50 tracks of this 2-CD album `The Ultimate Collection' seem to cover the widest range at the best value price. It certainly contains my `top ten' recognized hits as follows - `I'll Never Find Another You', `A World Of Our Own', `The Carnival Is Over', `Someday, One Day', `Walk With Me', `Morningtown Ride', `Georgy Girl', `When Will The Good Apples Fall', `Emerald City' and `The Last Thing On My Mind'. All these except one are on CD.1 - as is `Open Up Them Pearly Gates' which is my favourite and was a B-side to one of The Seekers' hits, and for me it makes CD1 the most nostalgic of the double album. Apart from this brilliant number there are other great `gospel' orientated songs including `You Can Tell The World' and `We're Moving On', and there are Seekers' versions of other popular hits of the 1960s - `The Times They Are A-Changing', `Island Of Dreams' and `Kumbaya'. However it is on CD.2 where the best of other genres will be found. For gospel there is `You Can Tell The World' and `Come The Day'; and for protest songs there is `We Shall Not Be Moved' and `Blowin' In The Wind'. This last doubles as a cover number of which other excellent examples are `Feelin' Groovy', `Yesterday' and `Lemon Tree'. CD.2 also embraces the greater proportion of folk songs with melodious numbers like `Five Hundred Miles' and `Danny Boy', and up-tempo numbers as `The Wreck Of The Old 97' and `Whisky In The Jar'. Look to the Amazon listing for yet more great numbers - but - look no further for the "ultimate" in collections of The Seekers hits and for positive proof of their amazingly wide ranging abilities.

There are some very good things about this collection. First, this is the only compilation to include songs from The Seekers' 1997 album 'Future Road' plus the brilliant single release 'Far Shore'. Second, and more significantly, we get the newest recording 'Massachusetts' - fantastic! The remastering is, on the whole, quite clean, and the sound levels have been upped to the maximum in line with most modern CD releases (possibly resulting in some loss in dynamic range...?)

According to the booklet notes, the group "joined in the process to personally select the songs" but I can't believe they would have opted for the mono mixes of some of the songs here over perfectly respectable stereo mixes (e.g. 'A World Of Our Own') or - horror of horrors - the very dodgy 'fake' stereo versions (e.g. 'The Leaving Of Liverpool' - compare this version to the true stereo version on 'A Carnival of Hits').

That said, this disc deserves four stars because of the sheer quality (albeit not always technical quality) of the songs and the sheer range of the recordings included. And it is, after all, The Seekers!

I have wanted to get a Seekers compilation for a long time and this one turned up on I Tunes for £9.99 for a double download (hope that is the right description), good value....yeah I suppose so.
Still It pays to shop around they say so imagine my delight to find this one nearly £3 cheaper and get a original CD into the bargain too.
The actual track choices are outstanding. you really dont need any other Seekers CD and the remastering is flawless,I dont expect to buy any more Seekers CDs this one has them all.
