Until recently all I knew of Les Paul was that he had the Gibson Les Paul guitar named after him, but this changed when I saw a TV documentary. I had no idea that he had, using primitive tape multitracking, introduced many of the now established guitar effects that have influenced recorded music for the last five decades, and equally no idea of his technical virtuosity on the guitar. Both of these feature throughout this collection, and on many tracks the guitar technique is breathtaking. Mary's vocals provoke different feelings in me. Silky smooth, they are like a hot milky drink by the fireside on a cold winter's evening, and I find myself loving or hating them depending on my mood at the time. They provide a strange contrast to Les Paul's frenetic playing at times, and the combination does sound a little dated now. Overall, however, if you haven't got any Les Paul in your collection, this CD is a fine introduction.

For Les Paul and Mary Ford fans, all the best of their output is here - and the quality amazes! You really don't need to look anywhere else to find definitive versions of their greatest hits. Some of Les's guitar work is still unbelievable, as are his recording techniques. Buy this with confidence!

This has all the hits. Fabulous innovator, rightly recognised now, but a long lonely road until the blossoming of the electric guitar in the late 50's

I found this album removed years from me, taking me way back to my younger self in the days before the advent of modern day electronic wizardy in the Music Industry. Les Paul was a phenomonen. His technical skill was immense and each of the tracks, with Mary in attendance, has bounce and a freshness. Some more than others of course but overall a fantastic array of artistry.

You tend to think that the 50-ties music was 'smooth'. In fact, this compilation shows that is not quite the case. Les Paul's sound is sometimes more 'rough', 'rock' and 'blues' than you might remember. So: great.
