Product Description

Product Description

This 10 CD set gathers together recordings that feature the Canadian tenor Leopold Simenau. His appearances at Festivals in Glyndebourne, Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg, and opera houses from Paris to New York, all proved his mastery of the art of song. Leopold died on August 24, 2006.

The celebrated lyric tenor Leopold Simoneau was born near Quebec in Canada, where he later set to work to establish an opera company. He served for a short time as the first Artistic Director of the new Opéra du Québec before moving with his wife Pierette Alarie to teach singing in California. Happily married for over 60 years, the love that united the two singers Alarie and Simoneau found its artistic documentation in many shared recordings, and most of them are to be found on the CDs in this set.

Personnel: Leopold Simoneau (baritone), Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Mozarteum-Orchester, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Bernhard Paumgartner (conductor), Bavarian Radio Chamber Orchestra, Eugen Jochum (conductor), Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra, Otto Klemperer (conductor) and others

Leopold Simoneau was one of the most stylish tenors to have been recorded. His voice isn't big but he uses it to great benefit in Mozart and French roles (tho Don Jose was a bit much for him). These CDs are an excellent tribute to a great artist - especially at this price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential 1 Nov 2013

Leopold Simoneau had one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th Century. Some of his commercial recordings are still available. Buy them! But get this as well, though a completist might want to hold off. These are some live recordings which seem to be rare, and the sound is better than you might think. But the majority of the tracks are from studio or radio performances from the 50's. If you have all the Mozart, the aria collections on Deutsche Grammophon, etc. you will find many duplicates. But at this price, even an hour of things you might not have is worth getting. And throughout, you are able to hear what a stylish, sensitive, brilliant artist he was. Truly, the price is unbeatable. A small worry for some people is a complete lack of notes and the cardboard slips that house the CD's. To me, both are inconsequential with this super inexpensive box set. This is unlikely to stay in print forever, so grab it. 10 CD's!
