5.0 out of 5 stars Substantial introduction to decorative knots 23 Feb 2011
By Neil Lewis VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book gives a broad introduction to decorative knotting. While the knots shown are not as numerous as in an encyclopaedic work like The Ashley Book of Knots, it is a substantial book and the knots here are described in detail with step by step directions and photographs. The photographs are generally clear and the instructions helpful. Knots covered include flat woven knots (great for coasters and mats), braids, plaits, sinnets, covering and netting knots (including hitching and whipping), floral and star knots, turk's heads (a comprehensive chapter on these woven knots used both as cylindrical covering knots and as flat knots, which includes instructions for a pineapple knot), spherical and lump knots, traditional Chinese and Korean (maedup) knots. Supporting information on materials and tools, and covering some of the history of knotting rounds out the book. There are a selection of suggested knotting projects, but mostly it's left to the reader's imagination how to use the techniques illustrated. A delightful and useful introduction to knot craft with some new ideas for even the experienced craftsperson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference boook 4 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A superb volume of decorative knotting ideal for the more skilled knotter or even the beginner to see what can be achieved with practice, superb pictures thru out and descriptions to help you decide which knots to have a go at tying some are more challenging then others but that is why I purchased the book in the first place, as you can only improve your knotting by trying harder knots and different knots all in all an excellent book I would recommend it to anyone into knotting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decrative book of knots 5 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The photographs are clear and the instructions helpful but i found that some of the detail in the picture gets lost using dark string on a dark tube to demonstrate the spanish ring knot on page 234 it would've been better with white string on a dark back ground and some of the pictures seem under exposed ie; not enough light. But saying that if i was to loose this book would i invest more money in getting another one, well YES of course i would very good book indeed

4.0 out of 5 stars Knots 28 Feb 2013

Excellent content but diagrams would have been easier to follow if different coloured cord was used. In some of the photos you can not see the pattern as it all merges together.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Book of Decorative Knots 4 Dec 2010
By Timothy McCurry - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have been waiting for this book for over a year. This was not a disappointment! This has very good illustrations and pictures. The book itself is is beautiful and can be a coffee table peice. As with any book about a skill, I'm sure it will be below some experts, but you will get results. The best part, is for projects for wrapping objects, there are real pictures of the project being made. For some this might not be necessary, but for visual learners, this is great. Happy knotting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Knotter's delight 3 May 2011
By patriks - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
First, I am relatively new to the decorative knotting world. That being said, I have accumulated a good sized collection of books already, probably 12-15 in number. So far, I would consider this book a must-have for the decorative knotter.

The author covers a remarkable spectrum of knots with excellent pictures and pretty good directions. The book is over 500 pages, so you definitely get your money's worth. There are sections on braids, plaits and sennits, turk's heads, oriental knots, flat decorative knots, combinations of wall and crown knots and more. There are pictures of various projects by expert knotters--some of them amazing--which may inspire you to start on your next project.

Although it would be hard for me to get by without Tom Hall's book and the books from Don Burrhus (knottool.com), if I had to have only one knot book, I would pick this one due to the breadth of topics covered.

Pros:
Great price
Great pictures, full color
Broad spectrum of knots covered, well organized
Knot directions pretty clear

Cons:
Some pictures could have more contrast in the cord colors to make for easier viewing

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money 7 Aug 2011
By Old Salt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A majority of the photos in this book are terrible. Most use dark colored line and many are knots made with dark colored line on dark colored objects and it is apparent that little or no thought of contrast was considered. If you are one who best learns by visual example stay away from this book because you will be frustrated before you get through the first knotting examples.

A book with far better illustrations and directions is: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Knots and Ropework: Over 200 Tying Techniques with Step-by-Step Photographs by Geoffrey Budworth, also available from Amazon. And then there is the grand-daddy of them all "Ashley's Book Of Knots" (ABOK) which is well worth the $60 price.

Exactly as the title say The Ultimate book of Knots. I have been a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers ten years and I'm still learning to tie knots. Excellent How-to photos of intricate knots.
5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, easy to follow 20 Jun 2013
By KnotNutz - Published on Amazon.com

Exactly what it claims to be - a comprehensive book of decorative knots. Easy to read, easy to follow. I actually own a hard copy of this book, and bought the kindle version in order to leave the hard copy at home, yet have something to travel with. If one is interested in tying knots, this is an invaluable purchase.
