Product Description

Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler star in this wildly funny battle of the sexes. Abby (Heigl), a successful morning show producer, is looking for a lot in a man. Mike (Butler), her obnoxious TV star, knows men only want one thing. Determined to prove that she's not romantically challenged, Abby takes Mike's advice during a promising new romance, but the unexpected results will stun everyone.

From Amazon.co.uk

Katherine Heigl further cements her reputation as one of film's most dazzling, and go-to, romantic comedy heroines. In The Ugly Truth she brings her deft comic timing and true vulnerability to a film that avoids clichés, successfully, all the way until the surprising, quiet end. Heigl's partner in crime--and at first, in pure hatred--is the rakishly charming Gerard Butler. Heigl plays Abby, a career-bound TV producer, and Butler is Mike, an outrageous dude's dude whose public access show about what men want (one thing only) makes him so popular that he's hired to work alongside Abby, who naturally chafes at everything Mike stands for. Yet The Ugly Truth could not be more unpredictable, and men as well as women will like the refreshing story line and the crisp direction by Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde, Monster-in-Law). Both lead actors put their all into their performances, and the nuance and depth makes The Ugly Truth not just a great date-night film, but a testament on the primal human urge simply to connect. The Ugly Truth is more than a little raunchy, and it deserves its 15 rating, but there's hilarity in its crudeness. The supporting cast includes the delightful Cheryl Hines and John Michael Higgins as a tensely married couple forced to appear together on TV. And Eric Winter (Brothers & Sisters) is dreamy as Abby's potential love-match--as long as she doesn't have to be herself. The DVD includes mostly forgettable deleted and extended scenes, but also a gag reel that shows that the cast had every bit as much fun creating the film as the viewer has watching it. The Ugly Truth has never shined so brightly. --A.T. Hurley

I went to see this film with a few of my friends at the cinema, and we all agreed it was the best comdey we'd seen in a long time! There are so many funny lines, and Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler are excellent, you wouldn't have thought it, but they really are! The film is very predictable, but then; what film isn't? A lot of comedies/romances are, so it didn't ruin the storyline for me. There are also a few sweet bits towards the end of the movie, so when I wasn't laughing, I was busy watching the sweet, romantic parts. This is, admitedly, a completely positive review, but I think the film deserves that, it may not be right for everyone but I certainly enjoyed it and will be buying it on DVD in the near future.

I found this movie to be both enjoyable and funny. However, there is more depth to it than I had first imagined. The characters at first seem to be shallow but are more complex than you first think, which means this movie is more than your average rom com. The premise of how different men and women really are, is obviously a charicature of both sexes, however, you will find yourself agreeing with much of what is said. I enjoyed this movie and feel that any lovers of rom com will too. I would highly recommend it.

Me and my husband really loved this film. He HATES rom-coms, I on the other hand love them, so finding something we can enjoy watching together can be tricky. Sure it follows a standard rom-com formula but all rom-coms do, where this was different was that it was hilariously funny, it has romance for the ladies and some good old crude, rude humour for the lads. Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler were perfectly cast as such complete opposites that you couldn't help but want them to end up together. If you don't like crass humour or foul language this is not the film for you but if you enjoy a good laugh, are open minded and know what men are "really like" you WILL enjoy this film. The cast had great chemistry, with the characters starting the film as typical male/female stereotypes and ending it having softened to show that every woman has a bit of man in her and all men do have a softer side.
Enjoy.....we certainly did!!

I saw this film at the cinema and am ordering it in advance. There are so many funny lines in it that I am sure I missed some of them as they were so fast paced... very very funny and Gerard Butler is so much more attractive than the pretty boy in the film. The scary thing is that there is a lot of truth about the ugly truth too!!

In Sacramento, the producer of a morning show Abby Richter is a controller that has a checklist with items about the ideal man for her; however she can not find any man that fulfils her prerequisites.

Her show has problems with the low ratings and the TV direction hires the cynical chauvinist Mike Chadway that hosts the popular and gross mannish show "The Ugly Truth" about what men and women really want in a relationship.

Abby has frictions with Mike and he proposes to help her to get her attractive neighbour Colin that fulfils her checklist; in return she would support him in the show.

Abby dates Colin but when Mike is invited to participate in the Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show in San Francisco, they get closer and fall in love for each other....

what makes this film work in so many ways is butlers absolute dinosaur of a man. we all have a little bit of him in us, but due to our PC lives, we always act differently on a date or in a relationship, which nine times out of ten, always fail because we never feel at ease.

the plot though, is predictable as is the narrative, and you can almost go 3...2...1... to when Butler falls in love with heigel.

get over this little hill, and it's very funny in places, and the chemistry between the two leads is funny and they both bring a little charm to the film.

the supporting cast though are dire, and depend on butler to spoon feed them laughs. when he isn't on screen, the film falters, and knows it.

It's not your average rom-com, it has a lot of bite, which makes it stand head and shoulders above recent same genre films.

I enjoyed this a lot - even though you know what is going to happen, i thought the story line was interesting and i identified a lot with the female character.

From the first scenes we all know what's going to happen and the only curiosity is how they will get there. Gerard Butler is a very convincing loud mouthed, uncouth and bitter man mentally scarred from previous experiences of relationship's. Of course, looking like he does women continue to fall at his feet even though he treats them despicably. Katherine Heigl, on the other hand is a successful producer who hardly has time for dates but knows what she wants in a man (and it's not him)! However, it doesn't take long and the journey is a sweet and comical one. The ending leaves a little to be desired but any fan of 'chick-flicks' will love it.
It is well acted and the dialogue roles along with a pleasing lilt. The lighting always makes the best of Miss Heigl's attributes and most pleasing to the eye it is and of course, Mr Butler keeps the ladies interested.
As said, it is rather predictable but is very rewarding for little thought input and a great way to while away 90 minutes.
