Product Description

In a glorious blend of visual and verbal humour, a typical programme begins and ends with the pair seated behind a desk reading quick-fire 'news' reports. In between, "in a packed programme tonight", there are sketches, ‘drama serials’, musical routines and a rambling monologue from Ronnie Corbett, before finally signing off with their famous catchphrase, "It's goodnight from me”, “And it's goodnight from him." Originally broadcast in December 1978.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2.4 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: 2-DVD Set, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett were an unlikely comedy team but their talents complemented each other perfectly in a series which ran for 16 years and became a part of British television history. This seventh series was broadcast between December 1978 and February 1979 and contains eight episodes of the usual hilarious fare. This comedy classic boasts extended sketches of Sid & Lily, George & Edie; Ronnie Barker speaking on behalf of 'The Society for the Shy and Embarrassed'; Ronnie Corbett in The Last Mango in Paris as well as the famous 'Argentinean Racing Pigeon' and 'Bobby Charlton' sketches. Musical numbers included The North Acton Ladies Slimtastic Club and the Kamikaze Theatre Company and The Manhattan Transfer were the series regular guests. By this series, a young David Renwick (One Foot in the Grave, Jonathan Creek) had taken over responsibility for writing Ronnie Corbett's monologues from Spike Mullins, meanwhile John Sullivan (Only Fools and Horses) was writing many of the Sid and George sketches (now accompanied by sketches featuring the Ronnies as their wives Lily and Edie). In a glorious blend of visual and verbal humour; a typical programme begins and ends with the pair seated behind a desk reading quick-fire 'news' reports. In between, "in a packed programme tonight", there are sketches, 'drama serials', musical routines and a rambling monologue from Ronnie Corbett, before finally signing off with their famous catchphrase, "It's goodnight from me', 'And it's goodnight from him." 5.0 out of 5 stars thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining 29 May 2010
By Su TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
This 8 episode season was originally broadcast from 26 December 1978 to 10 February 1979. At 40 minutes per episode the entire 2 disc collection runs for 320 minutes.

The discs include audio navigation, English (only) subtitles and English (only) language track.

There is no running serial through this season, but at least half of each episode is taken up with the antics of "Sid and Lily, and George and Edie" - of which the most famous and the best is the "Argentinean Racing Pigeon", which is only part of a much longer sketch.

There are still the musings of Mr Corbett as he sits in the chair in his one man spot, and the musical act this time are "Manhattan Transfer".

Sketches include: "Little Shop of Beans", "Euro Christmas", "Bad Memory", "Rupert Bear", "Society for the Shy", and "British Rail".

The musical numbers are:

McCleary's Gold
Saturday Night Fervour
Mario and Romano the Brighton Beach Sellers
Harvest Choir - watch the grey haired man in the second row
Bournemouth Tea Time Three
Spanish
Kamikaze Theatre
Slimnastic Display Group
Army Catering Corp

This was Messrs Barker and Corbett coming into their best and considering the age of the shows it is interesting to see how so many of them are still easily applicable to today's world (political and social).

The double disc set has provided me with several hours of light entertainment and as with the previous years will be watched over and over again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Variable quality 6 May 2012
By DLG

This series from the late 1970s has the tried and tested format of news items, party sketches, monologues by Ronnie Corbett, clever word-play by Ronnie Barker a musical interlude and our two stars giving us a musical send-up as a finale. It doesn't so much contain a mini-series, so much as a sketch in each of episode of two married couples, with first a scene of the two Ronnies in drag, playing the wives and then the two husbands, usually "down the pub".

The news items are often brilliant and, for me, were the high point of the series. Some of the other sketches work very well, but some don't work at all. This being the 1970s, the content contains a lot of innuendo still, which is bound to amuse some viewers and not others. The musical numbers at the end are always pleasing and the one in the barber's shop is particularly clever, however the songs in certain episodes are delivered very quickly and it is sometimes difficult to catch the lines.

Manhattan Transfer provide the musical interludes. To give them credit, they can sing and they presented themselves in an interesting way, but I suspect that their songs wouldn't be particularly to most people's taste.

You only get eight episodes, though admittedly they are about 40 minutes long.

Overall then, this is pleasant viewing, with two very fine comedians, but the material is of a highly variable quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars still funny, but..... 15 July 2010
Format:DVD
if ur a two ronnies fan, then still buy, you will still get some good laughs, but for some reason it doesnt feel quite as good as the last couple of series, i think it could be because of this series serial, which is sid and george, but with their wives. i prefer the 1 fairly quick sketch of sid and george, but the enlarged serial with them doing one scene as their wives, and 1 as sid and george just doesnt seem as funny, could just be me though! as i say, if ur a fan, buy it, still some great laughs!
