This is perhaps one of Turtledoves most interesting alternate fiction tales. Set in an alternate present where the American Revolution never took place and America remains a loyal colony of Great Britain, The Two Georges tells the tale of a loyal American policeman who must fight bitter American loyalists and enemies within his own ranks to get back a precious painting that has been stolen by rebels.
Not only is this a fascinating tale of thievery, loyalty and romance, it is also a brilliant view of an America that never became independant. This is a world deprived of much of the technology that we take for granted in the same period. The fastest mode of transport is by zeppelin, and gunfights are practically unheard of. Since there has been no Civil War to sort out matters between the Northern and Southern states, there is still a lot of built up resentment between Whites and Blacks, and even more between Loyalists and Terrorists who wish America to be free.
One of his finest, and should be read by any reader who values Alternate Fiction
