A novel of alternate history in which America had never left the British empire. Life is very different - calmer and less violent, death by firearm is virtually unknown. But as the story opens, conspiracy is seething beneath an apparently calm surface.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding Alternate Fiction 10 Nov 2003
This is perhaps one of Turtledoves most interesting alternate fiction tales. Set in an alternate present where the American Revolution never took place and America remains a loyal colony of Great Britain, The Two Georges tells the tale of a loyal American policeman who must fight bitter American loyalists and enemies within his own ranks to get back a precious painting that has been stolen by rebels.
Not only is this a fascinating tale of thievery, loyalty and romance, it is also a brilliant view of an America that never became independant. This is a world deprived of much of the technology that we take for granted in the same period. The fastest mode of transport is by zeppelin, and gunfights are practically unheard of. Since there has been no Civil War to sort out matters between the Northern and Southern states, there is still a lot of built up resentment between Whites and Blacks, and even more between Loyalists and Terrorists who wish America to be free.
One of his finest, and should be read by any reader who values Alternate Fiction

I like this book. There's something about it that I find very more-ish, very intriguing. It may be that this book is set in an alternate history (something which I always like to read), it may be that it has the name of a well respected actor (making the point that some actors aren't just one trick ponies), but it's probably because the story is so compelling. It flows on an even keel, it doesn't try to drag you too far into the complexities of an alternate future, and is generally bloody readable. This is the only piece of Turtledove's I've ever read (I'm thinking of reading others - suggest some) and I heartily recommend it to all. Also, it would I think make a very good film. Have to made abroad though...

4.0 out of 5 stars marvellously well imagined 24 Sep 2010
This political thriller is a slightly more unusual alternate history in which the American wars of independence never happened and where the North American Union under its Governor-General Sir Martin Luther King is part of the British Empire under the King-Emperor Charles III. This is a less technologically advanced modern world with steam-powered transport, airships and wireless as the main form of mass communication. The plot involves the theft of a famous painting and an assassination plot by the terrorist Sons of Liberty foiled by the heroes of the Royal American Mounted Police. Interesting and politically thought-provoking, if rather unlikely in places.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Two Georges 26 April 2010
A good read, and one of the best books i have read in a good while. The world without an American Revolution is one i would be happy to live in. Deffenately worth a read if you like alternative history.
