Product Description

In 2007 the New South Wales government suddenly scrapped a plan to utilise the water in the disused underground train tunnels beneath Sydney s St James Train Station. In 2008, chasing rumours of a government cover-up and urban legends surrounding the sudden back flip, investigative journalist Natasha Warner led a crew of four into the underground labyrinth. They went down into the tunnels looking for a story until the story found them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised 13 Aug 2012
Format:DVD
To say I wasn't expecting much from The Tunnel is an understatement. After all, the film used to be available to download completely free via BitTorrent, with the full support of its creators. This documentary styled "found footage" film tells the story of a news crew that illegally gain access to abandoned train tunnels beneath Sydney in an attempt to uncover answers to a mysterious government cover-up.

The acting is surprisingly solid. There were times I got lost in the movie, forgetting that what I was watching wasn't real, which is always a good sign. The cinematography and sound are both outstanding and manipulated to build tension incredibly well. One minor flaw I noticed though, was that the film shows interviews with the two survivors from the very beginning. It becomes clear early on who is going to live and who is going to die. I found myself wondering how the other two characters were going to die far too early in the film.

Nevertheless, The Tunnel is a brilliant low budget horror film. Watch it with that in mind and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hand held camera movie with a difference 9 April 2013
By Willow
Format:DVD
I am a fan of Australian films, having watched Wolf Creek. This film appealed because unlike other hand held movies, it wasn't set in a haunted house or a mental hospital. It is set supposedly in the tunnels under Sydney. I recommend looking at the special features first, about the actors and how the movie was made, this made it much more interesting. The story starts out very routinely at first with a young reporter trying to push an idea with her bosses. It is interesting to see the different way it was put together, with flashbacks (so you know how survived) and the build up to going into the tunnels. It was nice that the so called baddie in this movie is actually a real person and not a ghost this time and the characters were believable in their roles. I have watched this film twice and enjoyed it more the second time. Australian directors/producers know how to build the drama, having grown up watching picnic at hanging rock. This is a good edition to hand held films and I would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very very good.
One of the best documentary-style horror films that I have seen. I have never felt so uneasy watching a film like this and spent half the time peering through my fingers.
