Reading this book about the sounds around us has been a revelation, even though my job is in acoustics and I listen all the time. It could be described as an elegantly written book about the history of sound, as it takes us across both the world and time and helps us to imagine what those living before us or in different places would have as a sound environment. One of the research devices is the use of short quotations from written material by great authors. These authors are masters of language and describe beautifully their impressions of their day.
If you want to be able to hear those far off sounds for yourself - then tune up your ears, open your other senses, sit in a park or a busy street and dip into this book.
