I love these soundtracks! Along with Trevor Morris's 'Pillars of the Earth', these soundtracks are a valued addition to my score collection. I have just recieved from Amazon, Tudors Season 4 Soundtrack and it is definantly fast becoming a favourite of the four.
Trevor Morris music is majestic and epic, deserving of the many awards he has won. They have helped make a ok to good series excellent, creating atmosphere, emotion and tension to go with the very mysterious and dangerous life of a Tudor court. If the Tudors (not as bad as people make out!) did not have such wonderful scores, I am not sure it would have lasted the four seasons.
I listen to these types of soundtracks as I work in my classroom and they really help to relax and motivate me in my marking and planning. So why are they good?
Well each season's score (this is the last) have stand alone moments, in the actual drama series these very key scenes success are usually down to the accompnying soundtrack. For example in season 1 there are the tracks 'A Historic Love' (Henry's growing romance with Anne Boleyn) and Wolsey's suicide (self explanatory!!). Season two (possibly the weakest of the four)has the track 'Execution of Thomas More', which brings all the emotion accompnying the demise of this steady councillor. Season 3 has the amazingly choral 'Howling wilderness/Death of Jane Seymore', this is probably the best piece in all four seasons and had many fans begging for the belated release of this soundtrack on that track alone (see Youtube!!). Finally in season 4 there are at least three pieces that stand out, that off the 'Execution Ballard', 'Surrey found guilty' and 'End of a Dynasty'. Yes a lot of them do seem to revolve around death, but that was one of the realities of a Tudor court, especially Henry the Eighths! These pieces are moving, exciting and epic, but are part of an ensemble.
Morris uses organ, stringed quartets, orchestras, choral and solo pieces all to great effect. I love epic film soundracks, bit this is the first time I have come across a series with four consectutive seasons, each having a unique yet fantastic accompnying score.
Not since the LOTR trilogy have I found such consistantly good scores for all consecutive soundtracks.
I truly recomend this for your collection.
