Amazon.co.uk Review

Season 1
Pulling few punches and garnering its fair share of headlines as a result, The Tudors is a controversial, yet compelling period piece, that dramatically tells the story of the early years of King Henry VIII. Not for nothing, though, has it attracted its fair share of awards attention. For The Tudors is a complex drama, and not one to simplify its storylines. The young Henry, for instance, is exploring his muddled romances and his insecurities, against the challenges his kingdom is facing. It’s a plate-full for him to deal with, and in the hands of a superb performance from Jonathan Rhys Meyers--a real revelation in the role--as the young Henry, it’s all vividly and skillfully knitted together.

But The Tudors isn’t just about its central character, for there’s a terrific supporting cast at work too. Sam Neill’s Cardinal Wolsey, Jeremy Northam’s Thomas More and Natalie Dormer’s Ann Boleyn are just some who earn plaudits here. Behind the camera there’s the pen of Elizabeth writer Michael Hirst at work, and he too deserves much credit, clearly getting his teeth into the fascinating subject matter.

The Tudors is, undoubtedly, a graphic production, and earns its 15 certificate comfortably. It’s also been knocked for the liberties it takes with its history when putting its story across, with some justification. But it’s also most certainly terrific television, mixing in high production values with strong performances. In short, the ten episodes here will simply have you thirsting for the next series. Not before you’ve re-watched Season One a few times, though... --Jon Foster

Season 2
The Tudors: Season 2 begins with all the passion, violence and dark intrigue of the award-winning first series. King Henry (the dashing Jonathan Rhys Meyers) has appointed himself head of the Church of England. Meanwhile, upon the insistence of Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer), Henry breaks all contacts with Katherine and the noble Queen is banished from her court. Furthermore, a cook is blackmailed into poisoning a high-ranking bishop--then boiled alive for his crime. The Reformation has begun.

Synopsis

Focusing on the early years of King Henry VIII's reign, The Tudors looks at the colourful personal life and tremendously influential political life of the monarch. King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) was obsessed with having a male heir, which led to him marrying six times. Rome's decision not to grant him a divorce led to him taking on the power of the Catholic Church, changing Christianity forever in England. Features all 20 episodes of the first and second series of The Tudors.

This is hands down the best value DVD collection I have ever bought.

Each episode is like a mini film, the quality is fantastic, the acting is incredible, costumes are fabulously intricate and the script is enthralling.

I bought this DVD knowing I would be lying low recovering from surgery for a few days and wanted something longer than a 2 hour film to keep me occupied. I had no idea I would be glued to the set, watching episode after episode back to back over the course of the few days. And as soon as I had got to the end I restarted from episode 1 again.

Jonathan Rhys-Myers' Henry VIII is dark, exciting, attractive and very intense. The rest of the casting is perfect, including the sultry and provocative Anne Boleyn who manages to capture the King's heart and play him for her and her families advancement.

This is a visual treat, and provides an insight into the history and politics of the era with characters like Cardinal Wollsey, Thomas Moore, Oliver Cromwell, Henry VII, Anne Boleyn, Katherine of Aaragon, and the courts of France, Spain and Portugal.

As long as you see this as pure entertainment it is a great series. I have bought this to go alongside the more factual based David Starkey series of the time and have found that as long as you do not use it for serious study it is an interesting take on Henry as a person. As we only have contemporary opinions to rely on about the man himself it is quite possible that this portrayal comes close on his attitudes and opinions even if some of the historical fact is distorted.

These two series showcase the story of Anne Boleyn, the lady who "bewitched" Henry the Eighth and led to the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. This changed the course of history, as it led to England's break with Rome and the Catholic Church, and the establishment of the King as Head of the Church of England.

Meet the saucy and wily Anne Boleyn, the old fox Archbishop Wolsey, and the all-powerful King as they play out their parts on the stage of English history at one of its most dramatic times.

Visually stunning but annoyingly inaccurate if you are aware of the fashions of the period and the way Henry looked, this is nevertheless an entertaining, sexy production. I look forward to the next series.
