A JOY TO READ 14 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I found this book intriguing. James Randi slowly but surely displays all the feats performed by Uri, and exposes them for 'sleight of hand' conjuring tricks. A few other interesting facts about Mr Geller are revealed to us as well. The author uses a lively, entertaining style of writing that guarantees the reader will never be bored. I would recommend this book to anyone. I noticed that reviewers below who give the book zero stars actually make few references to the book, and ignore the hard evidence and research inside it. Where do their motives lie? And for a so called 'Journalist' to compare a book like this to "Mein Kampf" ("My struggle" - Hitler's book) just because you don't like the conclusion is not only disgusting, it also exposes shallow thought and lack of a good argument. Read this book. I think you'll enjoy it.

Once again, James Randi upsets the deluded by hitting them with hard logic, and raw facts. Unlike conjurers such as David Copperfield and the like, Uri actually claims genuine powers. But step by step, Randi dissects the "miracles" performed by Geller and exposes them for the tricks they really are. The reviewers above who claim Randi is just a magician with a grudge are completely missing the point. People have a right to know the truth. Read it.

A great read, which is badly needed with the overwhelming number of books supporting clairvoyance, psychic powers and such like. Contrary to what some might believe, Randi realises that while showing a non supernatural technique for accomplishing Geller like feats, logically this does not prove this is how Geller performs them. While he obviously believe this, he provides alternative explanations for what people witness. In the true nature of science, we must choose his, simpler hypothesis - that it is a skillful illusion, not the manifestation of unproven, untestable psychic powers.

Maybe a little rough around the edges, as Randi is not a professional writer, anyone who enjoyed "Flim Flam", would also enjoy reading this. The newly updated version is a nice improvement on the older edition.

By the way, contrary to what some reviewers believe, Randi has no need to investigate David Copperfied or skilled surgeons - they don't claim to have supernatural powers, Copperfield never seriously expects you to believe what has occured actually happened, just that he has skillfully created the illusion that it has. The surgeon uses modern medical techniques to heal people, not witchcraft. They *never* claim that they are contravening the laws of physics, unlike Geller. Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence.
