Book Description

10 Oct 2011
Awakened by the shuddering of a huge iceberg puncturing the side of the ship, Colonel Archibald Gracie was quickly dressed and on deck to see the aftermath of what was to become the most famous collision in history. He had gone to bed early on the night of 14 April 1912, expecting to be up with the larks, and enjoying a session in the gym and a game of squash before breakfast but by morning he was standing atop an overturned lifeboat awaiting rescue from the frozen North Atlantic. The night's exertions were to have a huge effect on Gracie. He began to write the story of the tragic events soon after he was back on dry land, completing most of the task by Autumn 1912. Telling the story of the last few hours of the sinking Titanic, and his miraculous escape as she plummeted 14,000 feet to the ocean floor, Gracie's book is recognised as simply the best account of the disaster. He died in December 1912, while proofing the manuscript, but the Truth about the Titanic remains today as the most accurate of the eyewitness accounts, recording Gracie's own story as well as that of each of the lifeboats as they left the doomed Titanic.

First Sentence
AS the sole survivor of all the men passengers of the Titanic stationed during the loading of six or more lifeboats with women and children on the port side of the ship, forward on the glass-sheltered Deck A, and later on the Boat Deck above, it is my duty to bear testimony to the heroism on the part of all concerned. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars A real first hand account. 28 April 2012
By Mark Webb TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This must be one of the first books anyone with an interest in the Titanic disaster must read. It is a first hand account by a survivor, already an accomplished and proficient author and is well researched with testimony of other survivors taken from the UK and American inquiries which took place shortly after the disaster itself. The book is well written easy to read but clearly well researched and authoritative.

The kindle version has been well made, with the text well laid out and easy to read.

Make this your starting point when studying the most famous maritime disaster of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A timely Kindle offer 19 May 2012
By Mondoro TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
One of the first detailed account of the Titanic disaster by a survivor, who employed what turned out to be the last few months of his life to collect evidence from other survivors and make a detailed study of both the British and American enquiries, extended extracts from which are quoted in this book. I was particularly struck by the defence of his client's action which Ismay's counsel gave in response to criticism at the Board of Trade enquiry.

A detailed list of lifeboats/collapsible craft, and numbers of crew and passengers in each, makes up the second half of the narrative, the number of half-empty craft underlining the inability of safety at sea regulations to cope with major emergencies on the new giant ships. Modern readers familar with the period will note Gracie's tendency to praise the virtue of Anglo-Saxon passengers, in contrast to those of other nations, and his practice of naming all the first class passengers rescued, while second and third class remain mere numbers: both not untypical of the period.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Truth About the Titanic 23 July 2012
By Jane
Format:Kindle Edition
A very interesting book written by a survivor of the Titanic. It contradicts other accounts of what has been written, but Gracie's account is backed up by other testimonials.
