Harry Ballard(Karl Urban, excellent) is a Professor of Anthropology, who has a sideline in exposing religious cults and sects. He recieves a video tape in the post, with a sinister message attatched to it-'The Black Lodge Is After You'.
Soon Ballard is being hunted down by the sorcerer Le Valliant and his crazed followers. As those closest to him start to die, Ballard's only ally seems a strange woman named Bennie, who is just a mad as the people trying to kill him.
This is a genuine treat. An inventive low budget horror from New Zealand, that is packed full of good ideas and creative flourishes. I liked the character of Ballard immensly, initially I found Bennie to be annoying, but I soon warmed to her idiosyncrasies. The special effects are kept a minimum, but that doesnt matter in a film that uses great ideas to push it on. When the demons make an appearance they look great, as do the sets, dripping with atmosphere. There is also a terrific ending.
A delight from start to finish, I highly recommend this little gem for your viewing pleasure. The only dissapointment, no extras on the disc. I would have loved to see 'the making of' this film. 5 out of 5 for the film, 4 out of 5 for the release
