Having read the Mavin Manyshaped books, I was interested in this, the main character Peter being her son.
Based in a world where people have 'talent' and society consists of real life chess or 'True Game', a few people within this world are trying to seek justice - an ideal long ago forgotton.
This book is very well developed, split into 3 parts. Peter is a wonderful story teller and honest about his short comings and modest about his strengths. Tepper, of course, excels in her story telling and as usual delivers an exciting, compelling story with interesting characters and plot developments.
A little slow to get into, this is well worth the read. Looking into the shape shifter talents, mind reading and the like is both clever and believable.
Peter grows with the book and you will come to love him for his endeavours to become a man.

It was a delight to be able to read "The True Game" once more. I had given up hope that it would be available after such a long time - the story, set in such an interesting fantasy world, grips right until the end. Please publish all the following stories in this series - it would be wonderful to have the complete set.

Her best work! Start with this if you've never read Tepper
I had read Beauty many years before I stumbled upon this book at the library. I have since read every book I could get of hers...but this is my favorite. Read more
