An eloquent challenge to Muslims world wide to wake up and start thinking for themselves. Fascinating for "non-believers" too, it raises more questions than can be dealt with here but opens up a discussion on the history, culture and political influence of Islam. Irshad Manji is articulate, blunt and seemingly without any hidden agenda. Definitely someone I would like to meet - if only there were more like her in the world. This book is worth your time and your money.

I do not know how I missed all the hype that was created because of the book and I have just started reading it. I intend to publish a book in reply highlighting shortcommings, I just wonder why other Muslims have so far remained quiet. Irshad is treating Islam as a homogeneous religion, which is not the case as Islam has been divided into 73 sects, I fail to understand to which of these sects Irshad is basing her criticism. My approach will be based on Shia Ithnasheri perspective trying to reply by mirroring Irshad's criticisms. What is common between me with Irshad is that I am also from East Africa (but I am based in the United Kingdom) and that I had the same nature of curiosity as Irshad had. The only difference is that I had approached the learned Shia scholars for replies.

Bigot-free history 5 May 2006
By Tracy
Format:Hardcover
As an agnostic I have been seeking to find material which examines foundations of religions. Whilst there are numerous articles which address and question the absoluteness claimed by religious leaders, there is almost a taboo against questioning Islam (possibly because, outside of the freedoms of the West, any questioning maybe at pain of death). This book redresses that imbalance and provides a refreshing informal unveiling of the bigotry, prejudices and oppression practiced in the name of Islam. I strongly recommend it for anybody seeking a clear history and understanding of Islam, not prejudiced by politics or self interest.
