A serial killer is on the loose. His target? Lone Western women lured to Hong Kong by the promise of easy money.

A serial killer is on the loose. His target? Lone Western women lured to Hong Kong by the promise of easy money. As The Butcher's killing spree escalates, bags of mutilated body parts are found all over the island - and more girls are disappearing.

Taking on his first homicide case, Detective Johnny Mann is determined to stop The Butcher's brutal reign. Haunted by the memory of his father's death by the Triads, he's the only man who can track down a killer who's paralysing the city with fear.

Georgina Johnson has left her tragic past in England to start afresh in Hong Kong. But soon her life is in peril as she is sucked into the sinister world of the city's hostess clubs.

Venturing into dark and dangerous places, Mann unearths chilling evidence about the killings. And then another body is found, one which brings the murders closer to home…

Bolt the doors, turn on the lights and pray for mercy - you'll be up all night with this disturbingly addictive debut from a writer being hailed as the female James Patterson.

After having read this book, i understood why some reviewers here absolutely loved it and others hated it. Myself, i quite enjoyed it, though i wouldnt put it with the elite. Maybe the author will get there, she sure made a promising start.
Set in exotic Hong Kong, this is not your classic serial killer novel. It s not a fault mind you, we have so much of them around although many people myself included never tire of reading them. This is a start of a series featuring Eurasian cop Johnny Mann, who would get on quite well with Michael Connelly 's Harry Bosch for their lack of discipline, always getting in trouble with their superiors, and for their relentlesness to get to the bottom of the case, and see that justice is done, one way or the other, by hook or by crook. Foreign girls are disappearing in Hong Kong's night life, and bodies or body parts start piling up. Mann is naturally assigned the case, as it seems that a serial killer is at large and has been for quite some time it emerges. Further digging uncovers new facts, which are terribly personal and intimate to Mann. This book is definitely not for the squeamish, as there are scenes of graphic violence and torture. It is not made to impress as i feel certain authors do, but in an attempt to make us realise of the cruelty and barbarism that man is capable of. Really loved the detailed account of Hong Kong, and its people. It s clear that the author has first hand knowledge on the subject as she has lived there for some time. As other reviewers pointed out, the book lacked in depth, in the sense that characters were really shallow and never explored in more detail, and dialogue always cut short. Just when it will be getting interesting, the chapter finishes and we are off to somewhere else. I will however put this to lack of experience and not laziness. Maybe it is Weeks' style and that s why they are calling her the female James Patterson. I am conviced however that if she puts some more effort, other writers in years to come will be called the new Lee Weeks.

I loved it :) There's nothing better than reading a book like this and not knowing who the 'baddie' is and some of the 'baddies' you can't help but feel sorry for. With lots of twists and turns I couldn't wait to read on. This was a 'must stay up late to finish it!' book. I'm currently online shopping for more from the same author.

Generally I don't really tend to review books I haven't enjoyed and wasn't going to bother to write one for 'The Trophy Taker' - I downloaded and read this book when it was on free offer prior to Christmas but I see it is now being charged for.

Based in Hong Kong, this tale about serial killings of Western women has as its central character Detective Johnny Mann, whose father was murdered by the Triads.

I suppose it is entertaining enough - but for me, could have better character development and be somewhat less explicit.

I understand this was a debut novel - perhaps the author's later efforts may gel together in a somewhat improved manner.

I felt it was just about acceptable enough as a freebie but I wouldn't have been keen if I'd paid for it!
