Product Description

Product Description

From January 2005, the Saatchi Gallery will hold a landmark exhibition in three parts, lasting the whole year, devoted entirely to painting. The title refers to the primacy of painting at the root of artistic expression. The exhibition will open with the work of five of the greatest modern European painters: Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Luc Tuymans, Jorg Immendorf and the late Martin Kippenberger. The Belgian painter, Tuymans, has been the subject of a major exhibition at Tate Modern in 2004. These painters are regarded as the most influential figures at this time. Their work will fill the entire gallery. They will be followed by a show of a new generation of painters including a number of British artists such as Cecily Brown, Jenny Saville, Gary Hume, Chris Ofili and Dexter Dalwood. The final part of the show will be held in the latter part of 2005 and will consist entirely of the work of new young painters. Following the success of 100, which was published for the opening of the Saatchi Gallery last year, The Triumph of Painting, which comes in a much larger format, should stand as the definitive book of current art with resonance beyond the walls of the gallery itself. This project will mark the return of the Saatchi Gallery into focus following the tragic loss of key works in the Saatchi collection in the fire of last year.

More of Interest than Interesting 27 Dec 2005
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
The Saatchi Gallery remains a potent force in the art world, literally defining the rapidly changing trends in art within a matter of months (and that is transient!). This hefty book shares with those who are unable to visit this exhibition the works of five artists Saatchi Gallery considers to be the avant-garde of art today.

The artists include Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Luc Tuymans, Jorg Immendorff and Martin Kippenberger among the fifty six artists in the year long exhibition. While many of the artists are known some are less well known and for a reason (!). The collection is not exciting nor particularly daring. Most of the imagery is suggestive of representation and of those mostly the figure dominates with varying degrees of success.

Catalogues of this sort feel more like promotional materials for a commercial gallery than documents on the state of art today. The reproductions are fine: it is the content that becomes almost wearing. There is no doubt that Charles Saatchi has been a significant mover in contemporary art from his stance in London. But this particular collection from his stable fails to catch fire. Grady Harp, December 05
Triumph of what? 11 July 2006

This volume presents a few great paintings.

But, ONLY A FEW.

So, how do we justify the Grand Title, "Triumph Of Painting"?

It's a good book 20 July 2005

Just like I like it - more pictures than words. For once in my life, though, I would like to have seen more text included, especially more about the artists. Nice format, high quality images.
