Book Description

Feb 1997
In the winter of 1850, Scottish Canadians working for a railway company were tunnelling through a mountain with the reluctant aid of the local Assiniboine Indians, when ritualistic killings were ended only by the mysterious collapse of the tunnel, and the burial therein of an Indian chief.

From the Back Cover

HE IS A SHAPE SHIFTER

HE IS AS OLD AS TIME

HE KILLS WITHOUT MERCY

Life is good in Silver, a small town high in the Canadian Rockies. Sam Hunt is a lucky man. With a loving family and an honest income, he has everything he wants.

But beneath the mountains a vile, demonic energy is gathering strength and soon it will unleash its freezing terror upon Silver. In the eye of the storm, one man struggles to bury the private horrors of his childhood. He knows nothing, yet seems to know everything: Sam Hunt.

All he loves may be destroyed by an evil beyond imagining. An evil from the buried, hated past. An evil named the Trickster.

“'The Trickster' begins with a blood curdling scream and maintains the horror for over five hundred pages”
OPTIONS

“'The Trickster' is very good indeed … Gray tells her tale with immense élan. A smashing debut that’s gutsier than most authors could ever be”
TIME OUT

“'The Trickster' is written with incredible vigour … thuggish, gory, sentimental, cosy. It grips”

5.0 out of 5 stars the trickster 3 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This was the first of Muriel Gray's books that I have read and I thought it was a brilliant read. As a fan of horror/fantasy I wasn't sure what to expect, I wasn't disappointed.Excellent! The book had me engrossed right from the first time I picked it up. The characters are believeable and the author takes you on a journey back in time to build a full picture of the lives of these people.
With many twists and turns along the way I was kept wanting to know what happened next as the story unfolded. The author used faith, belief and prejudices to show how the central character, Sam, struggled to face the truth and how when he finally faced his demons from the past he found true peace.
I have almost finished another Muriel Gray book(Furnace) and am looking for a third. I enjoy Ms Gray's way of writing and hope you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Trickster 19 Mar 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback
One of the teachers when I was at school thought it would be funny to give this book to me to read when we did a book swap for the sheer size of it. How she laughed on the other side of her face when I brought the book back in no less than 3 days later, having not put it down all weekend. It was gripping, horrific and fantastic. I think it has to be the best horror/thriller that I have ever read and so I dashed down to the library as quick as I could to snap up another of her fantastic books - "Furnace" and once again I was captivated, a truly ingenious author with a vivid imagination.

Format:Paperback
One of the best books ive read. A very unique plot, truly original and well researched. Very gory however but also scarier than most King novels (but not quite as good). Superb.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as munro-bagging without a beard
This book is basically a second-rate Stephen King clone and not really worthy of Ms Gray.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well written but fairly standard stuff!
I had high hopes for this book after hearing that Stephen King had endorsed Muriel Gray's new novel 'Ancient'. Unfortunately 'The Trickster' follows a well worn formula. Read more
