Product Description

Product Description

The Trespasser, one of D. H. Lawrence's lesser known works, was first published in 1912. Based on the personal diary of Helen Corke, the work follows her intimate relationship with her music teacher Siegmund MacNair, who cannot bring himself to either leave his wife and kids or commit himself permanently to Helen. After he commits suicide, Helen is devastated and heart-broken. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Book Description

The manuscript of Lawrence's second novel, The Trespasser, survives, and this edition presents the text for the first time as Lawrence wrote it, restoring his sentence-structure and punctuation and correcting numerous errors. Elizabeth Mansfield's introduction explores the background of the novel, presents the publishing history and the novel's reception. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Red-Hot But Ill-Fated 30 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is Lawrence's second novel, sexier and more courageous in every way than his first, The White Peacock. It would appear to have been suggested by a brief news article about an inquest into the hanging death of a professor of music. Siegmund is a violinist who is married to Beatrice and has numerous kids. They live in Wimbledon, but he takes off with Helena, a fellow musician, for a week of red-hot but ill-fated love-making on the Isle of Wight. He is not portrayed very sympathetically, though he is definitely a Lawrentian figure. When he returns the family is not pleased. Helena and some girlfriends go down to Tintagel for a holiday, and when Helena's letters to Siegmund are not answered she decides to investigate. The writing is very evocative of the locales, and great bursts of mythological imagery enter his writing for the first time. This is a first-rate psychological study; Siegmund is a man of great potential but he suffers from myriad mysterious psychological flaws. Nothing in this novel is simple; nothing is obvious. Everything is subtle and understated, even the lovely natural descriptions that abound on every page.

A TEDIOUS SIMPLE TALE 14 April 2010
By LINDA LEVEN - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
THIS SHORT, SIMPLE TALE IS TYPICAL OF LAWRENCE. A MARRIED MAN--A MUSICIAN-- UNHAPPY IN HIS MARRIAGE, HAS AN AFFAIR WITH HIS STUDENT. THEN HE CANNOT FACE HIS FAMILY AND COMMITS SUICIDE. AFTER HIS SUICIDE, LIFE GOES ON. HIS FAMILY SUCCEED WITHOUT HIM, AND HIS YOUNG MISTRESS FINDS ANOTHER MAN TO LOVE HER.
ITS IS SIMPLE AND PREDICTABLE. THE BULK OF THE PIECE DESCRIBES THE DAYS IN WHICH THE LOVERS SPEND SOME DAYS TOGETHER, ALONE, AT THE SEASHORE, ENJOYING LOVE AND NATURE. IT IS BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN, BUT I FOUND IT TIRESOME AFTER A WHILE. LAWRENCE WRITES NOVELS OF PURE POETRY, BUT THE TALE DID NOT KEEP ME INTERESTED. IF I WANT POETRY, I'LL READ IT!

Lawrence feels too Impressionable 30 Nov 1999
By David Wilson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The Trespasser is the tragic tale of Siemund, a music teacher with an unhappy family life, and his student, who becomes his lover. It isn't a worthless book, but your time would definately be better spent reading one of the famous Lawrence books - this is clearly the creation of a young, impressionable mind. For instance, Lawrence makes constant reference to Wagner's 'Ring' in the book, rubbing the reader's nose profusely in heavyhanded hints that Siemund is borrowed from the German composer's work.
