HASH(0x9652ee7c) out of 5 stars excellent children's book with eye candy for adults 7 Feb. 2014

Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I bought this book after recently discovering the author's hypnotic book of visual riddles, Maze. I bought this book entirely out of curiosity. This is a 25 page book of a nursery song, accompanied by 13 full-page illustrations and a 2-page forest illustration in both the front and back of the book.

The song tells a simple and instructive story about the circle of life and mankind's mutually beneficial relationship with nature. Ultimately, the world outlives us all, life springs eternal (as the song says, the green grass grows all around, all around, the green grass grows all around), and it's our duty to be good stewards of our environment. The song's lyrics are printed in a large, easily readable font, with 13 unique and beautiful decorative initial letters.

My favorite part of the book is the superb and deceptively simple artwork. The colors are rich, earthy tones throughout. If i had to guess, i would say the images are watercolored woodcuts. Every page has a floral border, with a different border every 2 pages. The skies at various times of day are recreated well, with some beautiful gradients for sunrise and sunset scenes. Lighting levels, effects, and shadows are top-notch. The drawing style resembles the simplistic forms of a 19th century chapbook, lending a rustic, antiquated style to the story. All the art is visually clear and informative, the use of perspective is flawless, and several compositions recall Rembrandt, Corot, Audubon, and a number of Dutch landscapes.

I highly recommend this book to parents and art and folk song lovers.

This book is about the circle of life. It is very beautifully illustrated and written and reads in a sing-song way that's almost hypnotizing. My son loves it.
