Book Description

1 Dec 2005
Features the characters of the popular ITV series starring Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris. Laura Thyme's cousin's son has recently become ordained, and is now the vicar of several small country parishes, the largest being Baffington. When Laura goes to visit him, she meets several of the locals, and witnesses the sudden death of one of them. A year later, Laura and Rosemary are summoned to help with an ambitious Medieval Fayre, organised by the local celebrity and historian, Franklin Danvers. Their task is to refurbish the very neglected churchyard, where the finest feature is a huge old yew tree. On their first morning, they discover the body of a man under the tree, shot through the heart by an arrow. Unfortunately, most of the villagers had just received tuition in archery, and several of them had proved to be excellent shots! Laura and Rosemary disagree as to whom they suspect of the killing. Rosemary has taken a liking to a local biochemist with a big secret, but Laura mistrusts him. The estate manager, Lyall, also behaves mysteriously. Even the vicar appears to have motives, means and opportunity galore...The village of Baffington is thrown into chaos, as the murder reignites old rivalries, family difficulties and unacknowledged passions. All interweave to create a story about a killing where almost everyone is a suspect.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time 23 May 2012
Format:Paperback
Why bother ?
The characters are completely superficial, you don't get to know them at all... the two sleuths, who are supposed to be intelligent, start wimpering like a victorian maiden each time they meet a man.
The characters of Harriet Luke and Mary Sutton are in turn crying and screaming but you don't know why. The vicar obviously does not know what he is doing... as he can't bring himself to go and see one of his flock to offer condoleances and support (and me, thinking that was one of the purposes of choosing this kind of life !). His mother is a completely insensitive and stupid woman (calling the police... the pigs... what else ?).
So, give this one a wide berth...
By the way, does the phrase "she shook her head indecisively" seem correct..
And the references are also incorrect. As far as I know, Persephone was NEVER the goddess of agriculture...
So, forget this book, if you can call that a book

3.0 out of 5 stars Undemanding murder mystery 10 Jan 2010
By Andrew Dalby TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
When the local bad-boy is murdered in the Churchyard with a bow and arrow Laura's cousin the local vicar falls under suspicion. But there is more going on in Baffington than meets the eye.

This is a fairly standard TV drama murder mystery where the limited number of characters makes the possible suspects and motives rather short. The ending is slightly unsatisfying as the culprit makes a ridiculous mistake.

For me the big problem is the way the book is written. This is obviously a book created from a script and so there is a lot of empahsis on dialogue and character motivations but not a lot of scene setting. The writing style is quite "turgid" and the first 150 pages seemed hard work. It improves towards the end, but I think that it could have been put in better hands to write the book as Simon Brett wrote the original episode.
